As a child, I would prefer to spend the first day of summer not out playing with my friends, but running to the library and leaving with a stack a foot-and-a-half high. It was always a dream to see my own work on those hallowed library shelves, or on sale at the bookstore, and Kyra Schaefer was the person to make it come true for the first time through the compilation book, When I Rise, I Thrive.
Kyra's publishing company, As You Wish, has been a major force in the world, providing opportunities for hundreds of voices to be heard, often for the first time. The common thread between all of the tales of heartache, trauma, hope and triumph is this: the perseverance of the human heart.
I'm so grateful to Kyra for her work, and the books that she will continue to bring into the world. She offered a few of her books in electronic form for free this week as a gift to a reeling community, and she has inspired me to do the same.
