Second-quarter global asset allocation perspectives – David Wolf

Second-quarter global asset allocation perspectives – David Wolf

Today on the show, we speak to portfolio manager David Wolf as he highlights the current market landscape and where investors could find diversification such as liquid alternatives. David notes recent core inflation numbers aren’t a surprise to the Bank of Canada. David, who is a former advisor to the governor of the BoC says expect cuts in the next 18 months regardless of the Federal Reserve’s movements and decisions. This is based on recent monetary policy report released by the BoC. David says what matters to the Global Asset Allocation team and how they manage funds is what the path of policy looks like versus what the market is discounting the path of policy at. He says this is important because this is what will affect the price of Canadian financial assets relative to the prices of other countries financial assets. David also touches on the pros and cons of illiquid alternatives, equities and bonds, plus looking at the 60-40 in perhaps a new way.

Mike says our current economic conditions are looking favorable - inflation is decreasing, job numbers are steady, signaling a strong market similar to that of the late nineties. He says the outlook is bullish with substantial growth in sectors supporting AI. Mike says the team continues to stay disciplined focusing on companies with robust earnings, revenue, and market advantages particularly in tech. They are focusing on energy and industrial sectors as well.

Investing in liquid alternatives – Rory Poole

Investing in liquid alternatives – Rory Poole

As liquid alternatives rise as a popular investing strategy, we check in with Fidelity’s Director of Alternatives, Rory Poole. Rory discusses the latest market trends affecting liquid alternatives and how they may fit in a client’s portfolio. Rory defines an alternative as any investment where the value is not solely driven by the stock or bond market going up. He says alternatives can involve many different types of strategies and assets and many investors don’t even realize that they own alternatives investments in their portfolio. Rory points out that liquid alternatives have evolved a lot in the eyes of the investor over the last 5 to 10 years. Rory talks about the five main alternatives classes including private equity, private debt and credit. He also deep dives into the various alternative funds Fidelity offers including the Canadian Long/Short alternative fund that was launched earlier this year.

Analyst perspectives: Banks and the consumer – Brendan Cochrane and Thomas Goldthorpe

Analyst perspectives: Banks and the consumer – Brendan Cochrane and Thomas Goldthorpe

Canada and the U.S. share many commonalities. Cultural influences, social values, and democratic political systems, to name a few. But the gap between the two countries has widened when it comes to the health of the consumer. Thomas Goldthorpe, portfolio manager, and Brendan Cochrane, equity research analyst, are today’s guests, joining host Pamela Ritchie. They’ll unpack the health of the consumer in both countries, including why U.S. is showing signs of recovery while Canada’s trade down continues to grow. Also, what implications does this have for Canadian investors? And where could they look for winning investment opportunities in this environment? We’ll hear how Thomas and Brendan believe that while the current situation is not ideal for Canadian consumers, few companies are completely exposed to them. And that in any sector, there are lots of companies that have different exposures and benefit from different types of economies, which presents an opportunity to create differentiated returns within a portfolio. They say there are lots of opportunities in the Canadian consumer space, and they just have to focus on the long-run potential instead of current positions.

Unpacking the 2024 Fidelity Retirement Report – Peter Bowen and Michelle Munro

Unpacking the 2024 Fidelity Retirement Report – Peter Bowen and Michelle Munro

Today on the show, we highlight the 2024 Fidelity Retirement Report and its findings on how Canadians are viewing and preparing for retirement. Host Glen Davidson sits down with Peter Bowen, VP of Tax and Retirement Research and Michelle Munro Director of Tax and Retirement Research, as they break down the perspectives, challenges, and trends of pre-retirees and retirees. Peter notes the survey noted many pre-retirees are delaying retirement - delaying beyond 65 or in some cases not even considering retiring at all. In addition, Michelle points out women view retirement more negatively than men. Peter breaks down the impact of the recent capital gains inclusion rate changes saying it will affect those with second properties like vacation homes, but also those with incorporated businesses. Peter says be sure to connect with your financial planner to figure out the best course of action before the changes come into effect in June of this year. They also stress the importance of having a written financial plan that addresses each of your financial goals -  88 percent of Canadians surveyed say they feel financially prepared for retirement with a written plan compared to 56 percent without one who do not feel prepared.
