The Intelligence: Our meeting with Macron

The Intelligence: Our meeting with Macron

France’s president is known for pronouncements of grand scope with one eye toward history. But when our journalists visited him at his residence his assessment of the state of the world was bleak—a dark, prophetic call to arms. In this special episode, we ask whether his view is accurate, whether his proposed solutions would work and whether he is the person to enact them.

The Intelligence: The kids are alright, turns out

When you look around the world, and at a wider set of measures, Generation Z are far better off than the popular narrative would have you believe. The Intelligence: Going back to raid school

A dramatic overnight raid in New York City was just one sign that protests at American universities are set to continue—a clear historical echo in an already-fraught election year. We ask why a niche newspaper run by Japan’s communist party has so much influence (13:05). And a study of new books on loneliness reveals both the benefits and drawbacks of solitude (20:39).

The Intelligence: Dengue’s grip on Latin America

The dengue-fever case counts now break regional records every year—and the structural reasons behind the spike suggest this sometimes-deadly virus will soon threaten more of the world. Unhappy about hosting changes

The Intelligence has been my go-to news podcast for a while now, thanks in no small part to Jason Palmer’s stellar hosting. However, since Jon Fasman joined, I’m finding that this is no longer the case. Host changes have happened a few times before, but they’ve been without issue (for instance, Shashank Joshi did a great job)—Jon Fasman, however, is not fit for the job, I’m afraid. Although he has a fair grasp of the medium and is significantly experienced at The Economist, his podcast skills leave much to be desired—his diction is lacking, his cadence confusing, and his interaction with guests is somewhat shallower in substance and less engaging than Jason’s, so much so that for the first time, I find myself struggling to understand what’s being said, both literally and semantically. I don’t know why this change was made, or why there is no oversight on such glaring issues (judging by the non-negligible amount of people who are experiencing the same issues as me), but if things keep going as they are, I’ll sadly have to look elsewhere for my news digest.
