EP1: TMS Co-Host Dawn Barnable on How I went from Zero to Ultra Cyclist in (a little over) 3 months The Mettleset Podcast

    • Wilderness

Dawn here! In late 2018, I decided to enter the world of self-supported ultra cycling with little more than a wish and a prayer, and signed up for my very first ultra race. At the time, I didn’t own a bike, had never owned a road bike and I had no racing (or real road cycling) experience at all. Three months later, in February 2019, I crossed the line at my first Ultracycling race, BikingMan Oman, having completed 1040km/7500m in 104 hours. I went on to compete in two further BikingMan races, one successfully and one, not so much.
In this episode, Afshan and I discuss how I managed to do this, the friends who helped me along the way and something that happened on the race that I have never spoken about publicly before. It’s a deeply personal episode for me but I hope it can inform, and encourage others to be fearless and accomplish whatever goal they set out to achieve, especially if it seems out of reach.
I’ve put more details on our website www.themettleset.com and if you'd like to follow my cycling journey as I revive my ultra cycling career in the next edition of Race Around Rwanda, please follow me on Instagram @dawnable.
Today’s episode was supported by the awesome and adventurous team at Deep Dive Dubai, the world’s deepest pool. Check them out for some truly awe-inspiring scuba and free-dive experiences.
Our wider support team for this episode includes Editor JJ Thompson and our Artwork is by the talented Alexandra Hickey of Studio Theodore.
We hope you enjoy the episode!
