This is what radio sounds like with a Covid facemask. Did it sound different? It may not sound very different, but it makes a big difference – especially if you don’t want to get the virus. And I don’t know about you, but I definitely don’t want to get the virus! And you may be saying, “Well, if you’re so adamant about wearing a facemask, why did you take it off?” I’m sitting alone in my home studio, so it’s not like I’m standing in the middle of 50,000 people at a TCU football game.

I’m sure many of you will recall a few weeks ago when I talked about being a grandparent who couldn’t hug his grandson, and you might even remember me saying, “We are not okay!” By that, of course, I meant – my wife and I are not okay with having to maintain social distance from our beloved grandson Liam. And in the same breath I want to make it clear we are not okay with being unable to hug our kids either – Derek, Danielle and Schuyler, but if I’m being perfectly frank (and I don’t even know anybody named Frank) – if I’m being perfectly candid, it’s mostly about hugging Liam. I remember wrapping up that segment by saying something like, “…and until that glorious day returns…” meaning that day when we could hug our grandson – well, that day has finally arrived…and not a moment too soon I might add.

I wanted to start the show off with a little levity – a little giggle, if you will. I saw a meme that one of my oldest friends in the radio business posted this past week (it was the legendary Charlie Van Dyke, who I’ve known since we were both teenagers on the radio – he in Dallas, and me in Fort Worth). And this meme probably pretty much sums up the situation for a lot of us.

    THIS WEEK'S GUESTS:

Barry Lofton - Founder of Free Range Culinary

Fred Olson - Formerly Mac Hudson of "The Hudson & Harrigan Show"

We need to talk! Well, I guess that sounds kind of silly, since this is a talk show – on a talk radio station, but I meant “We need to talk” in a more narrow, specific regard. I must admit I’ve struggled with how to frame the monologue this week, because I know it’s going to make some of you angry, and it probably won’t change anyone’s mind – whether you agree with me or not, but – well…we need to talk. And by that I mean – we need to talk seriously, and that’s not necessarily something The Outdoor Cooking Show is known for.

Well, it’s another “Fall On Your Sword” moment for me! And just when I’d gotten the blood cleaned off from my last “Fall On Your Sword” moment. When will I ever learn? (With apologies to Pete Seegar, of course.) Well, it’s the age-old story of a hard-headed old man who just won’t listen to his wife, even when she’s offering perfectly sound advice. So I deserve all the trouble I got into, and I’ll own up to that right up front.

I’m just gonna jump right into it today, because I’ve got a lot to say in this first segment. As a matter of fact, I can sum it up pretty well by just quoting a meme I saw online a couple of weeks ago. It said something like, “This social distancing thing is not working for us grandparents. We need to hug our grandchildren. We are not okay!” Yeah, that pretty much says it all for me – and for my wife Cindy, too.
