Throughout the Gospel of John, Jesus made several “I Am” statements — declaratory proclamations of who he is — and in the last one before he went to the cross, he pronounced, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.” This week Mike Mathis, Redeemer director of family ministries, preaches “The Vine” from John 15:1–17. The richness of this declaration is astounding — our lives and the source of all we do is bound up in Jesus. Those who belong to Christ bear fruit that is produced through his lifeblood. Moreover, in hardships and suffering, we can trust that God’s capable hands are pruning us so that we may produce even more fruit that reflect the character of our Savior.
