How Much Does It Cost to Start on Etsy?
Curious about the costs of starting an Etsy shop? Let’s break it down:
    Etsy Fees:
     • Listing Fee: $0.20 per item for 4 months, charged every time you list or relist an item.
     • Transaction Fee: 6.5% of the order total (including shipping and gift wrapping).
     • Processing Fee: Varies by country, but in the US it’s 3% + $0.25 per transaction.
    Example:
     • Item Price: $25
     • Shipping Cost: $5 (paid by customer)
     • Total Fees: 9.5% + $0.45 per sale
     • Calculation:
     • Shipping: $5
     • Transaction and Processing Fees: $2.85 (9.5% of $30) + $0.45 = $3.30
     • Total Fees: $8.30
     • Take Home: $30 - $8.30 = $21.70 (about 72% of the total)
    Other Expenses:
     • Labor
     • Materials
     • Equipment
     • Shipping supplies
     • Taxes

    Advertising Costs:
     • Etsy Ads
     • Offsite Ads
    Importance of High Profit Margins:
Starting with high profit margins is crucial to cover additional costs.
    Example:
     • Selling a shirt:
     • Blank cost: $8
     • Shipping supplies: $2
     • Advertising: $5
     • Other expenses: $15
     • Total Costs: $23.30
     • Take Home: $30 - $23.30 = $6.70 (22% profit margin)
    Final Thoughts:
While starting on Etsy incurs about 10% in fees, it’s a trade-off for access to millions of potential buyers. For comparison:
     • Shopify: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction
     • eBay: 6-15% depending on the category
     • Amazon: Average 15%, can be up to 45%
     • Poshmark: 20%
Starting on Etsy can be cost-effective with careful planning and high-margin products. Stay tuned for more insights!

Hey everyone, welcome back to the podcast! In today’s episode, we’re diving into Etsy’s recent announcement about retiring its old listing form. If you’re an Etsy seller, this update is crucial for you.
Etsy has decided to retire the old listing form that many of us have used to list items for sale. But don’t worry, they’ve assured us that we won’t miss any of our favorite features. The new and improved listing form is designed to be more streamlined and efficient, thanks to feedback from sellers like you.
Here are some of the key features of the new listing form:
    • Scroll No More: Navigation tabs help you quickly jump to different sections of your listing details, making the process faster and more seamless.
    • Optimize Smarter: The Performance tab displays performance data and reviews for your listings, making it easier to decide what types of edits to make.
    • Get a Sneak Peek: The listing preview feature lets you double-check your edits before publishing them live.
    • NEW! Skip the Mental Math: The profit calculator helps you efficiently estimate your profits while pricing your items.
However, some sellers have pointed out that a few features are missing in the new form. Etsy has listened to this feedback and made some adjustments. They announced that by June 25th, the following functionalities will be added to the new listing form:
    • Add manual translations to your listings
    • Enable your listings to appear on your Pattern site
    • Edit private, custom listings in the new form
    • See and edit all listing states (e.g., inactive or expired listings) in the new form
Tune in to this episode to get all the details about these changes and how they can help you save time and optimize your listings more effectively.

This Is Why You're "Failing" at Etsy

This Is Why You're "Failing" at Etsy

Hey everyone, in today’s episode, we’re diving into why your Etsy shop might not be performing as well as you’d like and what you can do about it.
Etsy has a whopping 7 million sellers and 92 million buyers. That’s a lot of competition, but also a huge pool of potential customers. Your goal is to attract and convert as many of those buyers to your shop as possible. Here’s how:
First, you need to offer something to a clearly defined niche with high demand. If you’re not targeting an in-demand niche, you’re setting yourself up for failure. No demand means no sales—plain and simple.
Next, let’s talk numbers. Even if you have amazing listings, SEO, and photos, you can still fail if you don’t offer enough products. You need to be a noticeable presence in the marketplace, not just a drop of sand on a beach.
For instance, let’s say you sell organic candles. There are about 120,000 listings for organic candles on Etsy. If you only have 20 listings, you’re a tiny fraction of the marketplace. To get noticed, you need more listings—lots more.
Each listing allows you to use around 37 keywords. With 20 listings, that’s 740 keywords. But against 120,000 competitors, that’s not much. The more listings you have, the more keywords you can use, increasing your chances of being found.
Consider aiming for 1,000 listings. If organic candles get about 3,600 searches a month, that’s 43,200 searches a year. With a 3% conversion rate, that’s roughly 1,200 purchases a month. If you represent 1% of the market, that’s about 12 sales a month for just one keyword.
It’s all about playing the numbers game. A clearly defined niche, high demand, quality listings, and a large number of listings all matter.
So, put in the work. Keep adding quality listings consistently, and increase your chances of success.
