An Interview with Kirsty Elson Making Your Way

    • Visual Arts

Kirsty is an artist who creates sculptures made from driftwood and other treasures which she finds on her local beach in Cornwall. I was absolutely delighted when she agreed to be interviewed on the Making Your Way podcast ... In this episode I talk to Kirsty about her process, her journey and what brings her joy, and much more!

When the very first idea for this podcast came to me I wrote a list of dream guests and Kirsty was at the very top, when she said Yes I was absolutely over the moon and it moved me forward from a place of feeling a bit uncertain about whether this was something I really could do, and it gave me the momentum to push forwards.  Not only is her work clever, delightful and multi-layered but I am also obsessed with the very idea of her process.

I love Cornwall, it’s such a magical, special place and the beaches there are undoubtedly some of the best in the world.  My favourite thing to do whenever we visit this beautiful part of the world is to walk on the beaches with my family and whilst they splash around and explore the rock pools, I wander and search for pieces of sea glass.  Kirsty’s process of what starts in the form of a treasure hunt, ie searching for pieces of driftwood and other interesting things that the sea gifts to the beach, combined with creating the unique sculptures that themselves represent the architecture and the atmosphere of Cornwall, is a magical combination.

I also have a fascination for all things miniature and the little sculptures of houses and quaysides that Kirsty makes, as well as her sea creatures, boats and other delights are wonderful.  If you haven’t seen her work, you must go and do some research and I promise you will not be disappointed, in fact, it will probably spark a new obsession!

This conversation was so ,much fun and so inspiring.
