Takeaway Kids Janet & Simona
-
- Society & Culture
Welcome to the wonderful world of Takeaway Kids!
We are Janet and Simona: a pair of wine and cheese indulging European born Asians reminiscing about growing up in Chinese takeaways, trying to understand why their Chinese families are calling them fat, Louis Vuitton is the holy grail of everything and probably facing a serious identity crisis.

7: Chinese money mindset & frugality
This episode we talk about the Chinese money mindset. Simona's Wenzhounese approach to hoarding as much money as possible and Janet's parent's vision that money should be earned to be spent. We'll also cover the ridiculous "frugal" strategies of our parents, their ridiculous spending behaviour and how hoarding is part of being Asian.
Let us know what you thought of this episode, what your own experiences are with Chinese money mindsets and if you have any requests for next episodes!

6: Corona, yellow fever and racism
We recorded this episode a couple of weeks ago when borders were still open and home quarantine was not a thing yet. Where Corona was still distant and not existent in Denmark and the Netherlands yet.
We talk about how Corona has affected perception on us and how it changes our perceptions, racism in general in the Netherlands and Denmark and whether our partners have yellow fever ;).
Since you're at home, give it a listen, some feedback and a shoutout when you actually listened.
Much much love, stay safe,
Janet and Simoma -
Episode 5: Asian beliefs and rituals
We're back!
In this episode, we talk about 4 Asian beliefs that frequently put questions marks too. Did your parents pull up your nose bridge to "naturally" boost while you were young? How about all the ladies who do not shower for a month and stay inside after giving birth? And is wet hair the cause to all our problems?
Listen and find out what we were taught during our Asian upbringings in the West and let us know in the comments whether you have any cray cray sounding rituals in your family.
Much love,
Janet and Simona -
Episode 4: The 5 Languages of Love and how Asians justify gift-giving as NOT being materialistic..
Apologies for the corny (book) title BUT we were pleasantly surprised when we found out we tested EXACTLY the same when we took the "5 languages of love" test. It may be the fact we're telephatically connected, or that we are long lost sisters.. or just the simple fact that Asians growing up in Europe are not that different .
Listen in to hear what our results were and how we think our Asian and Dutch/Western upbringing has influenced our beliefs about love & intimacy and why Asian parents don't tell their kids they love them, but will rather ask them whether they've eaten yet.
Let us know how you tested and what you want to hear from us the next time!
