EN – For the 2024 edition of the Free School programme, Kunstenfestivaldesarts invited artists, thinkers and activists to question the space of the kitchen table as a place for sharing food, a place where stories converge, but also a culmination of a history of domestic labour that is often invisible. This podcast, recorded during these talks and workshops, looks at the struggles of migrant domestic workers, the tools and strategies of resistance and joy as a political weapon. In this first episode, Silvia Federici and Territorio Doméstico tell us about the struggle of migrant domestic workers as part of "A life worth living: a workshop on struggle, care and joy", a four-day workshop organised by artist Anna Rispoli.

NL – Voor de 2024 editie van de Free School nodigde Kunstenfestivaldesarts kunstenaars, denkers en activisten uit om de ruimte van de keukentafel te bevragen. Als een plek waar we samen eten, de plek waar verhalen samenkomen, maar ook een culminatiepunt van onzichtbare huishoudelijke arbeid. Deze podcast, opgenomen tijdens de talks en workshops, kijkt naar de strijd van huishoudelijk personeel met migratie-achtergrond. Met een focus op strategieën van verzet en vreugde als politiek wapen. In deze eerste episode (in het Engels) vertellen Silvia Federici en Territorio Doméstico over de strijd van huishoudelijk personeel met migratie-achtergrond als onderdeel van "A life worth living: a workshop on struggle, care and joy", een vierdaagse school geleid door kunstenaar Anna Rispoli.

Un micro posé au cœur de ces rencontres et ateliers relate de la lutte de travailleuses domestiques issues de la migration, des outils et stratégies de résistance ou encore de la joie comme arme politique. Dans ce premier épisode (en anglais), Silvia Federici et Territorio Doméstico nous parlent de la lutte de travailleuses domestiques issues de la migration dans le cadre de “A life worth living: a workshop on struggle, care and joy”, une école de quatre jours menée par l’artiste Anna Rispoli.

FR – Lors de l’édition 2024 de son programme Free School, Kunstenfestivaldesarts a invité des artistes, penseur·ses et activistes à questionner l’espace de la table de la cuisine en tant que lieu de partage de la nourriture, un lieu où convergent les récits, mais aussi un point culminant de l’activité domestique, souvent invisible. Un micro posé au cœur de ces rencontres relate de la lutte de travailleuses domestiques issues de la migration, des outils et stratégies de résistance ou encore de la joie comme arme politique. Ce deuxième épisode est extrait de “A life worth living: a workshop on struggle, care and joy”, une école de quatre jours organisée par l’artiste Anna Rispoli avec la Ligue des travailleuses domestiques sans papiers (CSC Bruxelles), Territorio Doméstico et d'autres participantes. Le care, le rôle des artistes dans la lutte, la visibilisation ou encore la manière de se représenter sont mis sur la table.

The care, the role of artists in the struggle and the self-representation were all brought to the table.

This lecture by Sara Ahmed, author of Queer Phenomenology, explores how tables matter – from writing tables to kitchen tables to conference tables. By using the table as a starting point for reflection, she questions the way in which power is experienced and questioned in everyday life and in institutional cultures.

A series of sound clips that take you closer to the creations of Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2022. Listen to Lia Rodrigues talk about her creation, 'Encantado'.

EN - A carpet of variegated fabrics is slowly unrolled on stage, opening up a kaleidoscope of colours. Thus begins 'Encantado', the new and highly anticipated creation by Lia Rodrigues. With Covid-19 impacting particularly heavily on Brazil, the choreographer asked herself how we could “enchant our fears” in order to recreate a collective dynamic and bring individuals closer together. 'Encantado' is a mesmerising choreography for 11 dancers and countless fabrics, in which these forces – similar to the encantados – journey from one body to the other.

FR - Un tapis de tissus bigarrés est lentement déroulé sur scène, ouvrant un kaléidoscope de couleurs. C’est ainsi que commence Encantado, la nouvelle création très attendue de Lia Rodrigues. La production porte les marques du contexte dans lequel elle a été créée : tandis que la Covid-19 touchait violemment le Brésil, la chorégraphe s’est demandée comment « enchanter nos peurs » afin de recréer une dynamique collective et rapprocher les individus. Encantado est une chorégraphie envoûtante pour onze danseur·ses et d’innombrables tissus, dans laquelle ces forces – comme les encantados – voyagent d’un corps à l’autre.

Een tapijt, geweven uit verschillende stoffen, wordt langzaam uitgerold op het podium. Er komt een kaleidoscoop aan kleuren tevoorschijn. Zo begint Encantado, de nieuwe en langverwachte creatie van Lia Rodrigues. In Brazilië heeft het woord “encantado” verscheidene betekenissen. Het kan een synoniem zijn voor verwondering, of verwijzen naar de effecten van een betovering. Terwijl COVID-19 Brazilië bijzonder hard trof vroeg de choreografe zich af hoe we “onze angsten kunnen betoveren” om zo opnieuw een collectieve dynamiek te creëren en mensen dichter bij elkaar te brengen. Encantado is een fascinerende choreografie voor elf dansers en talloze stukken textiel, waarin krachten vergelijkbaar met de encantados reizen van het ene lichaam naar het andere.

EN - Okwui Okpokwasili debuted Bronx Gothic in 2014. In it, and alone on stage, she unveiled the hidden narrative of two black girls growing up in the Bronx in the 80s: in the space of a curtained room, the audience is drawn into their shared secrets. Built upon an exchange of notes between the two girls in the midst of a sexual awakening, Bronx Gothic looks to communicate what is essential about a body in transformation and the love, strangeness and terror that accompany it.

FR - Okwui Okpokwasili a créé Bronx Gothic en 2014. Elle y dévoile le récit qui se cache derrière deux amies, deux jeunes filles noires, grandissant dans le Bronx des années 1980. Dans une pièce aux rideaux tirés, le public est témoin de leur intimité. Constitué de notes échangées entre les deux adolescentes au moment de leur éveil sexuel, Bronx Gothic cherche à transmettre ce qui est essentiel dans un corps en mutation et les énergies qui le traversent : l’amour, l’étrangeté et la terreur qui l’accompagnent.

NL - Okwui Okpokwasili creëerde Bronx Gothic oorspronkelijk in 2014. Geïnspireerd op een briefwisseling tussen twee zwarte meisjes in vol seksueel ontwaken, communiceert de voorstelling het essentiële van een lichaam in transformatie en de energieën die daarmee gepaard gaan: liefde, vervreemding en angst. In een met gordijnen omwikkelde ruimte is het publiek getuige van een bijzondere intimiteit uit de Bronx van de jaren ’80.
