Councilman Carlyle Kent proposed using these funds for a consultant, highlighting the overlap between homelessness and substance abuse. Councilwoman Cheryl Richardson emphasized also addressing mental health issues. Collaboration with Cobb County and other cities is being explored, though the county's use of funds remains uncertain. Local organizations, including MUST Ministries, support the idea. A proposed anti-squatting ordinance and other innovative solutions, such as Atlanta's "housing bank," were also discussed.

Marietta Considers Consultant for Homeless Issues
The Marietta City Council is considering hiring a consultant to address homelessness, prompted by Councilman Carlyle Kent amid growing constituent complaints and opioid settlement funds. Kent emphasized, “We can’t just keep burying our heads in the sand… We need to find out what we can do.”
In 2022, Georgia secured $636 million from pharmaceutical companies, with Marietta receiving annual funds until 2039. City Manager Bill Bruton confirmed that using these funds for homelessness aligns with their purpose, given the link between homelessness and substance abuse.
Councilwoman Cheryl Richardson highlighted the importance of addressing mental health issues alongside substance abuse in tackling homelessness. Collaboration is on the table, with discussions between Kent and Cobb Commissioner JoAnn Birrell about jointly funding a consultant.

STORY 1: Police Arrest Man Accused of Driving Drunk, Killing Newborn
Zachary Scott Williams, a 31-year-old from Douglasville, was arrested for vehicular homicide after causing a crash while driving drunk on December 30, 2023. Williams was speeding at 67 mph in a 35 mph zone on Humphries Hill Road in Austell when he lost control of his vehicle, colliding with a Toyota 4Runner. Eunice Gyasi, a passenger in the 4Runner who was nine months pregnant, gave birth to a baby girl, Evangela Gyasi, who died 28 minutes later due to injuries from the crash. Williams, with a blood alcohol content of 0.156, was booked into Cobb County Jail without bond.
STORY 2: Georgia appellate court sets October hearing in Trump's bid to disqualify DA Willis
The Georgia Court of Appeals will not hear former President Donald Trump's appeal regarding Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis's role in his election interference case until October. This delay ensures the trial will occur post the November 5 election. Trump's legal team sought Willis’s removal due to her past romantic relationship with attorney Nathan Wade, who led the prosecution. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee ruled Willis could stay if Wade resigned, which he did. Trump, indicted last August with 18 others, faces multiple charges across federal and state levels, including a recent New York conviction for falsifying business records.
STORY 3: New Agreement Between UWG and GHC for Health Students
The University of West Georgia (UWG) and Georgia Highlands College (GHC) have partnered to offer health and wellness students an accelerated path to a Master of Science in Integrative Health and Wellness (MSIHW) degree. This program, approved by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), enables GHC students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Health Science to take graduate-level courses at UWG during their final undergraduate semester. Successful students will gain automatic admission to the MSIHW program at UWG, preparing them for roles in healthcare teams or community-based programs. This initiative aims to address the growing need for healthcare professionals in the region.

Kim McCoy Named Director of Cobb Family Advocacy Center
The Cobb Family Advocacy Center has officially opened its doors in Marietta, Georgia. This transformative hub aims to provide comprehensive services to victims and survivors of sexual assault, child abuse, elder abuse, human trafficking, and stalking—all under one roof.
Kim McCoy, the new executive director, brings her extensive experience as the former director of the DA’s Victim Witness Unit. She has been pivotal in making this center a reality, alongside Jason Saliba (sah-LEE-bah), deputy chief assistant district attorney.
The journey began with a visit to San Diego’s advocacy center and was fueled by a $400,000 grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.
“We're not just keeping promises; we're building stronger collaborations for comprehensive victim services,” McCoy states.
The center partners with organizations like LiveSafe Resources and SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center to offer essential support.

Drink Up: Marietta Considers Revising 3 Alcohol Ordinances
From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, May 31st, and I'm Keith Ippolito.
Drink Up: Marietta Considers Revising 3 Alcohol Ordinances
The Marietta City Council is set to review proposed amendments to three ordinances related to alcohol sales. Initiated by Councilman Carlyle Kent and supported by local business owners, these changes aim to invigorate Marietta's social and economic landscape.
One focal point is the introduction of a retail pouring license, which would allow wine and beer retailers to sell by the glass outside scheduled tastings. This change, championed by Karen Heard of the Marietta Wine Market, aims to make the Square a more vibrant and inclusive destination.
Other proposed changes include clarifying that restaurants can sell alcohol by the bottle on-site and permitting liquor sales during city events.
