The FLQ Crisis was a series of events that occurred in the fall of 1970 in Quebec. Between 1963 and 1970, the Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ), a militant Quebec independence movement, carried out terrorist attacks. The FLQ kidnaped British trade commissioner James Cross in Montreal on October 5, 1970. FLQ members also kidnapped and assassinated Quebec Immigration and Labour Minister Pierre Laporte on October 10, 1970. The Quebec Premier and Montreal Mayor called for federal help to deal with the crisis. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau responded by deploying the Armed Forces and invoking the War Measures Act. Diya Chaudhry tells the story of Jean LaPorte, son of the deceased Pierre LaPorte, after knowing about the murder of his father, and Claude LaPorte, nephew of Pierre, after watching the abduction with his own eyes.
