The earth is filled with many fascinating things; some are living and some are nonliving. The field of biology studies those things which are living organisms. These are distinguished from nonliving organisms by several important characteristics, which include the facts that living things are comprised of cells, are capable of reproduction, use DNA as a storage molecule for heritable information, grow and develop, obtain and process materials and energy, respond to the environment, regulate their internal processes to maintain homeostasis, and (as populations) are capable of adaptation, which is the root of biological evolution. In this module, each of these characteristics of life will be discussed in detail.
