Dr. Andrew Delton is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science, the Center for Behavioral Political Economy, and the College of Business at Stony Brook University.

Dr. Talbot Andrews is Assistant Professor of
Political Science at the University of Connecticut.

They are both authors of Climate Games: Experiments on How People Prevent Disaster.

In this episode, we focus on Climate Games. We first talk about the challenges of climate change, and the best solutions we have for it. We discuss why climate change is a “global social dilemma”, and how we can use economic games, like the disaster game, to study how people make decisions that are relevant to climate change. We talk about how people react to different kinds of technology, to what extent they are willing to help other groups of people and avoid disaster for others, and the relationship between leaders and citizens. We also talk about how we can study inequality through disaster games. Finally, we discuss whether we can be optimistic about tackling climate change.

Dr. Michael Petraglia is Director of the Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution at Griffith University, Australia. His research has centered on a range of subjects concerning human evolution, including the evolution of cognition, the evolution of behavior, and the relations between climate change and hominin dispersals.

In this episode, we start by talking about what we know prior to the speciation of Homo sapiens. We discuss whether H. sapiens arose in one single location in Africa or multiple locations, the environments we have evolved in, and migrations within Africa. We talk about technological changes, symbolism, and sociality in H. sapiens, what we know about out-of-Africa migrations, and issues with hypotheses based on coastal movements. We also talk about the effects of climate change on human dispersals, the hominin species we interacted and interbred with, and the biggest missing pieces in the history of human dispersals. Finally, we discuss whether lessons of the past can tell us anything about humanity today.

We talk about what valuing truth means, the intellectual virtues, epistemic luck and epistemic risk, and valuable kinds of ignorance. Finally, we discuss what education should be about, how to cultivate intellectual virtues in students, and the role of technology in education.

Dr. Oliver Traldi is a John and Daria Barry Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the James Madison Program at Princeton University. He studies epistemology, focusing on questions about the nature of epistemic norms and the epistemology of the social world, especially the epistemology of politics. He works on norms of inquiry, conceptual engineering, reasons for belief, inferring beliefs from actions, the epistemology of disagreement, and the epistemology of moral progress. He is the author of Political Beliefs: A Philosophical Introduction.

In this episode, we focus on Political Beliefs. We start by discussing what political epistemology is, what counts as political, what political beliefs are, and what political disagreements are based on. We then go through theories of political beliefs, including the ones based on personality and moral foundations theory, ideology, group membership, social isolation, and cognitive heuristics. We talk about the epistemology of democracy and expertise. We address the issue of conspiracy theories. Finally, we discuss whether the history of our society has any bearing on our political beliefs.

Dr. Mazviita Chirimuuta is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy in the School of Philosophy, Psychology & Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. She has focused on philosophical issues around vision, mind-brain and consciousness, and in the last few years she has mostly been writing about the problem of color, and how ideas from neuroscience can bring fresh light on the realism vs. anti-realism debate. She is the author of Outside Color: Perceptual Science and the Puzzle of Color in Philosophy, and The Brain Abstracted: Simplification in the History and Philosophy of Neuroscience.

In this episode, we focus on The Brain Abstracted. We talk about the thesis of the book, and the challenges of studying the brain. We discuss simplifying strategies in neuroscience, and why scientists seek simplicity. We talk about a pluralist approach to neuroscience. We explore the illustrative example of reflex theory. We discuss computational approaches, the limits of modeling, and
representations. We compare computational-representational approaches to dynamical systems approaches to the motor cortex. We talk about machine learning approaches, whether AI can be conscious, and embodied cognition. Finally, we discuss the relation between philosophy and science.
