Melissa Whippo: What Can Wine Learn from the Psychedelic Renaissance?

Melissa Whippo: What Can Wine Learn from the Psychedelic Renaissance?

In 2024, many wine businesses are at a crossroads as they face shifting consumer demographics and market uncertainties. At the same time, the world is in the midst of an emerging psychedelic renaissance, and there has been an increase in chatter and some strategic messaging of psychedelics as a replacement to alcohol. We have been curious about this phenomenon.

In this episode we talk to psychedelic psychotherapist, Melissa Whippo about: what the wine business can learn from the legal and therapeutic psychedelic space, what lies beneath “wine mom culture,” how to shift into right relation with alcohol and other substances, and ultimately how to bring ourselves closer to that which has the potential to make our lives more beautiful.

Our guest is Melissa Whippo. Melissa is a psychedelic assisted psychotherapist based in Oakland, CA. She combines her expertise in Women's Health, Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy, and Sacred Plant Wisdom to provide healing pathways for her patients. She is also a writer with recent work appearing in the Washington Post. Melissa has taught at the UCSF School of Medicine, has been a lead trainer for psychedelic assisted psychotherapy programs at the Ketamine Training Center, Inbodied Life, and 1440 Multiversity. She has taught modules on Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy and Women’s Health for Journey Clinical. She has also presented at SXSW on Holistic Approaches to Psychedelic Training. Melissa worked for over a decade at UCSF Medical Center providing therapeutic support for pregnant and postpartum patients and co-founded the acclaimed Afterglow Postpartum Support Group. Melissa is a researcher and founder of Deva Collective, which is a Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) fiscally sponsored non-profit that is pioneering psychedelic research for Women’s Health.
