Podcast 12 - Innovative cities - Prof Tim Broyd

Podcast 12 - Innovative cities - Prof Tim Broyd

Prof Tim Broyd is immediate Past President of the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Professor of Built Environment Foresight as well as Honorary Professor of Civil Engineering at University College London.
Prof Tim reflects on the past 200 years of the civil engineering institute.  It was started in a coffee shop with young engineers looking for a mentor. Prof Tim describes civil engineers as invisible superheroes who helped remove terrible diseases and benefited society in many ways, such as installing safe drinking water to cities.
Prof Tim also highlights how engineers have to reinvent themselves for the next 200 years, to solve the unintended consequences of development – such as climate change, biodiversity collapse and massive mental illness in our cities.
He has great advice for mentors to encourage young engineers to find their own voice.

    Podcast 11 - Greenroads - Jeralee Anderson

    Podcast 11 - Greenroads - Jeralee Anderson

Jeralee Anderson is an amazing CEO.  From graduate engineer to worldwide change agent, and all at such a young age.  She has achieve this by giving action to her dream and learning the art of building an empowering team.  One that reframes the biggest public asset in the world. Roads
She created the Greenroads organisation. Within a few years it now operates worldwide.
She asked the simple question: “If we have Green Buildings why can’t we have Green Roads?.  And get them certified”.
Jeralee has a passion for turning roads, around, from polluting lifeless entities into life giving public amenities. Her journey has been meteoric but hard at the same time.  Many roading engineers are stuck in the past and hold onto their patch.  Jeralee has set a path of conversion.  Creating reborn roading engineers.  Roads that are delivered at half the cost and more than double the value.  Councils around the world are set to save their tax payers billions of dollars. And the free co-benefit is they help create regenerative cities.
I love Jeralee’s simple system of getting certification.  Interesting she has calculating the carbon burden of a road as a basic essential that engineers must determine and then asks them the hard question of how would they redesign the road to make it carbon neutral. The top two Accreditation levels are “Gold” and “Evergreen”.  No one in the world has achieved these levels yet.  That is both an indictment on and challenge to the roading fraternity.

Podcast 10 - Regenerative City Strategies - Helen Beaumont

Podcast 10 - Regenerative City Strategies - Helen Beaumont

Helen has a passion for strategies that create regenerative cities. She heads the Strategy and Policy team for Christchurch City in New Zealand.  You will hear through her conversation her love for leading and working in teams that create people centred cities.  Her mentors encouraged her to grow and expand her wisdom beyond what she had formally studied.  This led her on a journey through analytical science, research, working as a commissioner, learning mediation skills and strategic formulation.  Helen has a good way with crafting words and making complex subjects understandable.  I love her phrase “Good strategy and policy in a city is like plumbing and electrical wires in a house.  You don’t know they are there until they go wrong.” So true.  Christchurch found that out the hard way.  The earthquakes of 2011 and 2012 brought poor strategy and policy to the surface (as well as society’s love for driving down minimum standards until things collapse or break).  This left the city broken, in untold social trauma and a $60 billion bill.  A stark reminder to other cities to ensure their strategies and design codes reflect a strong regenerative backbone. Gone are the days of pushing down city systems to extinction.  Helen talks warmly of her mentors and this encourages us to find mentors that help us live a fulfilled journey in serving our fellow neighbours, and that includes the planet.
    Enjoy.

Podcast 9 - Spiritual wellbeing - Barry Van Heerden

Podcast 9 - Spiritual wellbeing - Barry Van Heerden

Barry is a spiritual mentor.  He probably prefers the term spiritual pointer.  Someone who shows you where to find spiritual health.  True east, as he says. Barry lost his father at 12.  This then took him on a journey of alcohol and drugs. He found the gutter.  He then journeyed through the hippy movement, eastern religions, Zionism and now is a strong advocate of the message proclaimed by Jesus. Love your God and neighbour; firstly with your heart. Our cities, teach us to have other gods – self, consumerism and a hubris lifestyle. No spiritual home found there. Instead loneliness and despair.  Barry describes his spiritual journey and touches on aspects that affect all of us.  Family members with cancer, your moral compass, religion in churches.  He discusses what true religion is all about.  He discusses how you can find your spiritual wellbeing.  Barry’s journey is an enjoyable insight into what makes beautiful people love to create beautiful cities.
    Enjoy.

Podcast 8 - Value driven business - Bec McMaster

Podcast 8 - Value driven business - Bec McMaster

Bec McMaster is a sustainable business manager.  She calls herself a catalyst.  Someone who makes things happen. She has a rich history of everything that she touches turning into a sustainable practice.  Not many people have that midas touch.  A rare find indeed. Enjoy the story of how she turned from studying business, to giving it up because it was boring, to turning to art and then back again to business – but this time with the artistic flair of sustainability.  She brought the Good on You app to New Zealand before it was released in the USA.  She also is brought the Unschool re-education school to New Zealand where people learn to unschool their reductionist approach and relearn how to be collaborative and use system thinking and doing to create beautiful cities. Bec’s story is one of finding your inner value and then using it to do your day job.  Her journey is an enjoyable insight into what makes beautiful people love to create beautiful cities.
    Enjoy.

Podcast 7 - Carbon Neutral Cities - Craig Pocock

Podcast 7 - Carbon Neutral Cities - Craig Pocock

Craig Pocock is a Landscape Architect and Director of Design Environment. He is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects. Craig is passionate about raising the bar of professionals to understand the carbon load of their designs.  Cities are large carbon creators – due in the main to carbon insensitive designs by professionals. Who then 10 years later redesign and replace the existing award winning design. We create double the carbon load for the same space. Something is terribly wrong. In addition the public are forced to maintain and use what we design, this again adds to the carbon load. Listen to his great story about reaching out to professionals to create carbon neutral cities.  He gives the details of why everything that is green is not necessarily a carbon sink.  His story is about opportunity and hope.  How this generation of professions can create a change needed in cities to save the planet from its carbon overload. Craig is a leader and tells his story with insight and passion. Enjoy.
