Beyond the Obvious – Episode with John Carroll

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with John Carroll

In this conversation, I had the pleasure of chatting with John Carroll, professor emeritus in Sociology at La Trobe university. John’s work focuses on culture and its crucial role in the human search for meaning. For those unfamiliar with John’s work, you can often find him as a contributor in the weekend Australian newspaper.

Early in May this year, I read an article that John had written in the paper titled, Coronavirus and the great age of uncertainty.  His article inspired me to read some of his other works on culture and meaning, including his books, The Existential Jesus, The Wreck of Western Culture – Humanism revisited and finally the book I’d almost finished by the time we had our conversation, Ego and Soul – The Modern West in search of Meaning. John’s books consider the cultural underpinnings of Western Civilisation, and I found them so helpful to contemplate during this time of great uncertainty.

Being personally sensitive to the collective anxiety that many of us are currently experiencing, I found in John’s books a balm to soothe my recently amplified existential angst.

In our chat, we discuss questions of meaning but also look to the future in terms of potential impacts on current and emerging trends from his sociological perspective. We also discuss the recently proposed government policies of picking winners within university education and its likely impact on culture.

It was a pleasure to chat with John. There is depth and nuance to John’s perspective that I only really started to grasp when re-listening to our chat.

I hope you find the conversation as interesting as I did. Enjoy.

Note: this conversation was recorded on the 25th of June 2020, before Melbourne went back into lock-down.

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with Jamie Nicol

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with Jamie Nicol

In this conversation, the first in a series of conversations with some of Australia’s best investors and fund managers, I chat with Jamie Nicol, CIO and a founding partner of DNR Capital, a $6B Aussie equity manager based in Brisbane.

It was a broad conversation where we discussed the challenges in building his business over almost 20 years, as well as a chat about his investment process and how his team identifies quality businesses.

What I found really interesting throughout this conversation with Jamie, was his self-awareness and openness, through his willingness to share his strengths, but also his challenges and areas where he is looking to improve.

I finished this conversation feeling that luck has played only a small role in Jamie’s and DNR Capital’s success. He clearly has measure, humility, persistence, and discipline in sufficient stock that luck was only ever required at the margins. I hope you enjoy our conversation.

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with Ben Farinazzo

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with Ben Farinazzo

In this conversation, I chat with Ben Farinazzo. Ben is an Australia Day Ambassador and passionate advocate for mental health, veterans and the healing power of sport.

You have probably come across Ben around the time of the Invictus Games, where he won gold medals in powerlifting and indoor rowing.

Whilst winning gold medals is impressive in itself, it’s Ben’s journey that led to them that’s amazing.

Ben served in the Australian Defense Force, culminating in a tour to East Timor, where he experienced trauma that is difficult to imagine. Years later, in the midst of a major breakdown, being diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Ben then broke his back and neck in a biking accident; as if his mental health challenges weren’t enough.

What I particularly loved about this chat with Ben was how he was able to shift his perspective on life through massively challenging circumstances. While the need for flexibility of mind was forced upon him, he embraced it and is a beautiful and humble human being because of it.

I finished the conversation with Ben feeling grounded and grateful. I hope it has the same effect on you. Enjoy.

    End Note

Part of the conversation with Ben deals with his struggle with mental health issues including his suicidal thoughts. If you’ve had issues arise for you as a result of our conversation, please reach out to Lifeline on their crisis support line on 13 11 14.

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with Jason McIntosh

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with Jason McIntosh

In this episode I talk with Jason McIntosh, the founder of Motion Trader, a subscription-based trading service for ASX listed stocks. I’ve known Jason since 1994 when I first joined Bankers Trust in their foreign exchange department where Jason was the Yen Forwards trader.

I’ve always known Jason to be patient and disciplined in his trading. Even back in the dark ages when he was a discretionary trader. His trading today is 100% algorithmic and it was interesting to hear about his logical evolution into algorithmic trading.

He runs a highly transparent strategy and one of his many great comments in this conversation was that trading is not about secrets, it’s about process. I personally found Jason’s approach to markets almost like an antidote to the current uncertainty confronting market participants today. I hope you find the conversation as interesting and insightful as I did. Enjoy.

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with Daniel Want

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with Daniel Want

In this episode, I talk with Daniel Want, Director and CIO of Prerequisite Capital Management.

If you’re interested in markets and macro-economics, this is a great chat. Daniel is a very nuanced thinker, as he is able to see unintended consequences as if they should be obvious to us all.

In this conversation, Daniel talks about how the world was positioned heading into the current crisis and the importance of this as context, in determining likely paths for economies and markets over the coming months and years.

Of course, all of the views discussed in this conversation are conjecture and hence general in nature, so needless to say, you shouldn’t take this conversation as personal advice.

It was a thoroughly thought provoking and educational chat with an investment manager that is navigating this current storm like a seasoned sailor. I hope you enjoy.

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with Paul Ross

Beyond the Obvious – Episode with Paul Ross

    This

episode is with Paul Ross, the founder of the Citizens Dividend Organization,

which is a not-for-profit organization with the primary purpose of advocating

for the introduction of a Universal Basic Income (UBI) policy here in

    Australia.

    I’ve

followed the UBI conversation around the world over recent times, particularly

Andrew Yang’s contribution during the democratic primaries in the US. Paul has

some significant value to add in this debate. He has thought broadly and deeply

about the subject, both from a social science perspective and an economic

perspective. Whilst I’ve been curious about a UBI, I’ve also been skeptical,

but Paul’s logic and reasoning has most certainly shifted my thinking.

    When

listening to this episode, I encourage you to lay down any political ideology

you may have for a moment and listen to Paul’s arguments. You may just find

yourself as curious about it as me. I hope you enjoy.
