EP05 - Interview with Sami Halabi

EP05 - Interview with Sami Halabi

Sami is the founder of the app “univoice” which helps people to learn a language through music.
He himself is fluent in four languages, loves to learn even more and can be definitely called a lifelong language learner. To improve his skills is an important part in Sami’s life. For him, it makes a huge difference to talk to people in their mother tongue to be able to dive into the culture and to understand what people really want to say. Another point for him is to discover the richness of history which forms a culture. The ability to communicate to native speakers helps to uncover all of that.
Sami made the experience that learning a new language is a little bit like a personality change. At the beginning, he was shy and did not speak a lot because he didn’t have an extensive vocabulary to have a good conversation. Though, improving language skills is a key to get in contact and to discover differences between cultures.
How does Sami learn languages? Everywhere, he was taking notes and practised them. After a while he had his own dictionary on his phone and used a lot of different tools. But at the end, none of them were really successful for him. Apps interfaces all look similar and that’s why Sami started to create his own app called “univoice”. The app helps to learn languages by music. Sami remembered that at the age of 16, it helped him a lot to improve language skills by listening to songs and bands. He learnt so many words and phrases and had a lot of fun. To help other people as well he founded his company.
You will learn in this episode:
👉 Why language is the key to discover a culture
👉 Why Sami is  fascinated by languages and he thinks that he would miss a lot not speaking them
👉 Why a language is a lot more than just words and can tell more about the social life in a country
👉 Why listening to songs helps to improve your vocabulary
Sami is always looking for investors, partners and people who love to learn languages and would like to test the app.

EP04 - Interview with Irmeli Gnilka

EP04 - Interview with Irmeli Gnilka

🗣Speech coach Irmeli speaks six languages and has been to nine countries. Since she's been living in Germany for a while now and because of her husband being German, she has had plenty of opportunities to practice and learn German, for obvious reasons 😊.
However, her “language learning philosophy” was/is different. As a student she travelled to several countries without the ability to fluently speak the language.
👉Her approach: Make sure you have a job/ task in the country, then pack your bags and go.
👉Her advice: Don’t be too afraid of making mistakes and just talk! People are so polite and just happy when someone speaks their tongue.
👉In addition, she recommends that you surround yourself more with the new language you want to learn. That can be radio shows, youtube videos, podcast or (children) books.
An effective combination for learning and memorizing is to hear and read the language and to write down whatever is new and useful to you.
You will learn in this episode:
how to learn 6 languages by the age of 41 the importance of your mindset when learning a new language alternatives for the classic language course for both beginners and advanced options to improve a language skill when you’re “almost perfect” how speaking new languages can help fight stereotypes/prejudices Shownotes

    EP03 - Online Courses vs. Face2Face

    EP03 - Online Courses vs. Face2Face

What is better - a face2face or an online course for learning languages? This is a typical question from language learners and organizers of courses. In this episode you’ll learn about the pros and cons. You’ll find out what the best choice is for you, based on your learning style, time availability, technical equipment, and budget.
If you’re rather a communicative learner and you need more structure and physical contact in order to be motivated and effective, a regular course is the best fit.
If time is an issue or you value flexibility plus you’re an auditory learner, an online course is the way to go. This variant is mostly cheaper, but requires a high degree of self-direction and technical equipment.
You will learn in this episode:
The pros and cons of an online course vs. a face2face course Why your personal learning type is most important when deciding to use an online or face to face course  Why a face to face course is typically more effective What possibilities you have for finding funds if budget is an issue Shownotes

EP02 - Interview with Jana Wieduwilt

EP02 - Interview with Jana Wieduwilt

Jana Wieduwilt is owner of a German marketing consulting company and a language learner of English and Spanish.
At first, Jana and her company started in the German market, but as they expanded to English speaking countries, she had to reactivate her language skills as an adult. Another key motivation to improve her English were her sons, who attended high school in the USA.
What did Jana help reactivate her language skills? Most importantly, she needs an emotional reason for learning, such as understanding a great English movie or finding out how her sons were doing as students in the USA. She also listens to English podcasts and videos related to marketing and other fields she is interested in. In addition, a private language teacher accompanies her progress.

You will learn in this episode:

Why talking and understanding a foreign language is more important than grammar alternatives to traditional learning of vocabulary Why an emotional motivation is key for learning languages Why speaking the mother language of your clients is crucial for building trust learning tips from adult language learner Jana Wieduwilt What pilgrimage has to do with your personal and professional success Shownotes
