    Blood Pressure Measurement

    Blood Pressure Measurement

This episode we're going to cover how we measure blood pressure in clinical practice.
We'll cover the automated and manual BP cuffs, the Finapres system and the arterial line.
We'll also go over the physics behind the Korotkoff sounds.

If you have any questions, comments or requests please email me at questions@planaprimary.co.uk
You can find all of our other episodes at PlanAPrimary.co.uk or through your podcast player of choice.

    MRI

    MRI

This week we are covering the beast of a topic that is MRI.
We'll cover the basics behind nuclear magnetism, alignment and stimulation.
We will also discuss relaxation times and how different weightings can give us different images.
Finally we will talk about the practical implication of having a patient in the MRI scanner whilst anaesthetised.

If you have any questions, comments or feedback, feel free to email me at questions@planaprimary.co.uk

All of these episodes are free so please tell everyone who might find them useful. Find more in your podcast player of choice or at my website: www.PlanAPrimary.co.uk

    Pulse Oximetry

    Pulse Oximetry

This episode covers the physics behind pulse oximetry. It goes over how we can use the different absorption spectra of oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin to determine their relative concentrations and therefore a saturation.
We then talk about the common issues that we encounter when using pulse oximetry in clinical practice.

A good episode to listen to before this one is Infrared Spectroscopy and Capnography. It covers the principle of infrared absorption in more detail.

If you have any questions or comments, please leave them on the website planaprimary.co.uk or email me at questions@planaprimary.co.uk.

This podcast is completely free, so please share it with anyone who you think might find it useful.

    pH and Severinghaus Electrodes

    pH and Severinghaus Electrodes

This episode covers the physics behind the pH and Severinghaus electrodes used to measure pH and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in blood gas machines.
It also covers how we get our bicarbonate and base excess values on blood gas results despite not measuring it directly.

All of these podcasts are free, so please feel free to share them with anyone who might find them useful.

    Oxygen Sensing

    Oxygen Sensing

This episode covers the different methods of measuring oxygen concentration in anaesthetics. We'll cover how oxygen's oxidative properties allow it to be used in electrochemical sensors such as the Fuel Cell and the Clark Polarographic Electrode.
We will also cover how its paramagnetic properties allow it to be measured with the application of a magnetic filed, such as in the null-deflection and pulsed-field paramagnetic analysers.

If you have any questions, comments or would like to request a topic, please email me at questions@planaprimary.co.uk

Remember, all of these episodes are free, so please share them with anyone who you think would find them useful!
