How To Get Gratitude To Work For You

Have you been doing the ‘gratitude thing’ that everyone talks about but something’s not quite clicking for you, and you’re trying to figure out how to get gratitude to actually work for you?

    I’ve got you.

Now, You can listen all the way back to episode one titled ‘how to journal for the non dear diary type’ to hear me banging on about how amazing incorporating a daily gratitude habit is for your mind.

It’s what was the beginning of my journey from Eeyore on a bad day to having hosted about 160 episodes of The Positive Pants Podcast.

    Gratitude is magic.

As a daily practice, and in the tough times.  But it’s not a thing that you ‘do’ it’s a way of life.

Some side effects of practicing gratitude regularly include:
    - Less stress.
    - More kindness, to others and yourself.
    - Better relationships, with others and yourself.
    - More happiness.
    - Better sleep.
    - Higher self esteem.
    - Less negative self talk.
    - More relaxation.
    - More resilience.
    - More mindfulness.
    - More presence.
    - More positivity.
    - Taking more action.
It’s living mindfully.  It’s perspective. So some of these are definitely good to have in your back pocket as a business owner right?!

It’s the starting point I teach my clients, well, everybody, when they want to make changes in their lives.

Consistently writing down 3 things per day that you’re grateful for is the most common way to ‘do’ gratitude.

So often it’s a small list for you to write one or two words.

    BUT...

The biggest mistake I see is doing your gratitude as if it’s a box you need to tick off.

What I mean by this is the thought process really isn’t in it.

And that’s the part you need.

That’s the important part because the EMOTION of gratitude is what starts to make the changes in your brain that you want.

That’s what re-wires your neural pathways through a process called neuroplasticity to fire and wire new networks to make gratitude your path of least resistance.

So what that means is that becomes your go to way of thinking.

So you can see how that would help with perspective, resilience, patience and all that good stuff.

Which also means it’s so much easier to take action.

So this way of doing things is a frustration of mine because it’s been over simplified.  It’s also a frustration I see in clients when they think they’ve ‘tried’ gratitude and not felt the benefits.

    It’s really similar with meditation.

It’s making assumptions of how it ‘should’ be and when we’re wired for instant gratification if you don’t see results straight away it’s easy to give up.

Which is the other common mistake I see, giving up too soon.

When you’re practicing gratitude there’s a lot going on in your noggin.  You’re wiring new neural networks like I said, and this doesn’t happen overnight.

Most gratitude journals have the 3 lines included.  Which is great IF yo

When Things Don’t Go To Plan

When things don’t go to plan, it can feel like a real kick to the stomach.

A lot can go on internally.

We hear it in our noggin, and we feel it in our body.

Perhaps it shows up as that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Or perhaps it’s anxiety that you feel in your chest.

We beat ourselves up, we make it mean something about us and how we’re flawed.  We can make all sorts of rubbish up in our heads that it makes it harder to take action again the next time.

It took a lot of mental energy to be able to do it in the first place, so your brain goes...hang on…it took all that energy AND it made you feel bad, so no way jose!

Why would we do that again?!

It wants to protect you from pain at the end of the day.

And you can easily find yourself in a pattern or it being hard to take action.

But here’s the thing.  You have a LIFETIME of those experiences at play.

We have good old negativity bias too working for us which means we hold on to those negative experiences and perhaps ignore the times where it DIDN’T happen and went how you wanted it to.

If we have a belief that things have to go right the first time, why would we ever try again if it doesn’t?

This could be our first live, a training in someone’s group, a speaking gig, a social post that tanked, anything.

This is often at the heart of feeling like your business failed early on, or like something didn’t work before actually giving it a chance to.  Or tweaking and experimenting to see what will work.

We need to reframe how we think about these things.

So much of running your own business is about experimenting.  You don’t learn anything otherwise.

We have to be open to things not working.  Importantly, we also need to remember that most people don’t talk about the things that go wrong.  You don’t see people talking so much about the launches that didn’t go well.  The posts that tanked. When they fell over in a room full of strangers at an event.

It’s less about these things happening, which they do.  But more about what we make them mean.

What we make them mean about ourselves.

The reason I want to talk about this today is because things haven’t gone according to plan for me with something and I'm totally fine with it. And it’s certainly not the end of the road.

One of my goals this year was I really wanted to get the Positive Pants Planner out by Christmas.

    It’s not going to happen.

Old Fran would have had a lot to say about it.  Old Fran would have beaten herself up around all the many ways she’d ‘failed’ and was ‘useless’.

This Fran is fine.  Yes it would have been amazing BUT, I knew I didn’t know what I was doing when I started creating it so the time frame was a hard one, a little bit finger in the air.  AND covid hit.

I wanted it to be out within a few months and there have been areas where I‘ve really dragged my feet.  I have to take responsibility for that.

I’ve procrastinated over the 2 final pieces of the puzzle I need to create because we’ve had a battle trying to get printers and cloth merchants to come back to us.  We’ve had a battle trying to get realistic quotes.

I wanted to have a little chat today about the secret to confidence.

I have been LOVING leading the wonderful people who signed up through me, through Lisa Johnson’s one to many programme. It’s been sheer joy to be honest and I wanted to share with you why.

As a bonus I set up what I call our ‘secret squirrel’ group.  This is a secret group away from the noise and one of the reasons I set it up was for people to feel safe to do the things that they were holding themselves back from.

Things like going Live, doing an intro, sharing content, testing things out, things they would worry about not being ‘right’ or ‘perfect’ if they were doing it straight away to their audience.

It’s something that can REALLY hold people back, I see it all the time.

They’ve got all these great ideas and great knowledge to share, but they don’t because of all the things underneath that.

    The lack of confidence.

The fear of getting it wrong.

    The fear of being judged.

The fear of stumbling over words, or not looking perfect.

All the gremlins that make me show up ‘messy’.  I like to show people that typos in your content, fluffing up your words, losing your trail of thought, the dog walking in in a podcast recording.

There’s a method to my madness as to why I leave ALL that stuff in.

There’s a reason I'll go on my stories and be honest about being in my jim jams or having no makeup, or slobbing on the sofa because it’s what my body tells me it needs, or being goofy.

Because that’s me.  I had an existential crisis the other day on my instagram stories over whether an Avocado was legitimately a fruit or a vegetable.

I wasn’t along because 30% of you thought it was a vegetable.

    Because it’s real.

    It’s reality.

Because it encourages you guys to do the same.  To embrace the imperfect.  To embrace your foibles.  They’re what make you you.  And they’re what make people want to learn from or buy from you.

If you were constantly waiting for things to be ‘in place’ or ‘perfect’ or to feel ‘ready’ or confident enough you’d never do it.

But that’s the kicker.  If you’re waiting for confidence to show up you’ll be waiting for the rest of your life.

So, in this group I wanted to give them a little bit of an experience to show them what they were capable of doing.

I know a thing or two about how we tick, I know the things that hold people back, I know how much we internalise and personalise things and stop ourselves from taking action because of it.  I also know how much we overcomplicate moving through it.

I also know how simple it can be to do so.

So I wanted to share a little secret about confidence for you.

The big secret, the magic pill that you want that will help you create all the confidence you need...is to take a deep breath and DO THE THING.

I know, I know...not what you wanted to hear but stick with me.

You already have that confidence and know how within you.  Just not in the particular area that you’re holding yourself back in just yet.

    But it IS in you.

    How do I know?

There will be things you ARE confident about in your life.  No matter how small they are. T

In the last episode we talked about what procrastination is, what it’s not and how to find out why you might be doing it.  If you haven’t listened to that one yet make sure to go there first.

It’s hugely important to work that stuff out first before you can find the ways of overcoming it that are actually going to work for you because it’s highly individual and some of it hugely deeply rooted.

I promised i’d give you some ways to overcome it once you’ve idenitified the what, the why and the how of YOUR procrastination.

So what can we do in practical terms now we understand more about what’s underpinning the issue?

If you know motivation is the issue.
What’s behind that lack of motivation?

Are you lacking motivation because you’re in the danger zone - it’s a concept from Tony Vee.

If you were to rate your life right now out of 10, where would it be?

Anything 6 or below is actually a GOOD thing, because you’re motivated enough to change things.

Change only happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.  That’s a bastardised Tony Robbins quote for you there.

The danger zone is when you’re around a 7/10.  Why?? You’re comfortable being uncomfortable.

You’d love for things to change but you’re not motivated enough to do whatever it takes, this can create a low mood and cognitive dissonance, where you feel like 2 parts of you are battling against each other.  Then comes good old procrastination!

You consciously want something but your unconscious is working to make damn sure everything stays the same.

So when you know motivation is at the heart of your procrastination, what can you do? Don’t wait to ‘feel like it’ it’s highly likely to never happen.

Go back to WHY you want to do it in the firstplace. But really WHY.  Not a surface level one. So whatever you’ve landed on keep asking, and what does that give me? You’ll soon hit the real reason.

Connect to how you’ll feel once it’s done. This is some of the future you connection.

Connect to the consequences of NOT doing it!

Bribe yourself.  We’ve talked about the rewards feeling too far away, what can you do to bring the rewards closer? Create icro goals that have a reward along the way.
Find a better reward than the avoidance gives you.

    Motivation follows action.

Use Mel Robbins 5 second rule to 5-4-3-2-1 and start.  Give yourself 5 minutes.  Tell yourself you’ll do it for 5 minutes.  Research shows that 80% of people who start will keep going!

Put things in place to make it as easy as possible.  Accountability is your friend!
If I had listened to my MANY excuses when It came to launching The Positive Pants Podcast I  would have listened to the ‘I’m no good at tech so there’s no way I can produce my own show’.
I would have listened to the ‘there are already so many amazing podcasts with much bigger names who’d want to listen to mine’ or the ‘I don’t have time’ gremlin, the impostor syndrome (all the inevitable mindset gremlins that come along with stepping outside your comfort zone!)
I just would have not started...because I didn’t know where to start!

For more, head over to: www.franexcell.com/ To sign up for The Positive Pants Planner Waitlist: https://www.franexcell.com/pppwaitlist/ Procrastination is something I get asked about a lot. It’s a BIG way that we self sabotage right?

I was doing a training in Janet Murray’s membership group recently and I realised that not that many people talk about it in the way that I do, often it’s pure productivity tips, so I thought it would be helpful to give you a bit of an updated episode on procrastination because I haven’t done one for a while.

It can help you reframe the way you think about procrastination and hopefully be able to approach it more consciously and from a place of compassion for yourself.

So I'm going to talk about what procrastination really is, and what it’s not and why we do it. I’ll give you some more tips next week but for now grab your journal and see what comes up for you.

    So What is Procrastination?.

It’s intentionally delaying something for seemingly no good reason.
BUT, unconsciously there is actually plenty of good reason which I will go into.

It’s universal but highly individual.  It’s incredibly common, but the REASONS behind it are down to the individual, their history, their beliefs, their conditioning and all that good stuff.

It’s the oh so frustrating gap between where you are and where you want to be.   Between intention and action.

It’s a habit. As humans we repeat behaviour, our brain likes the familiar.  We have a tendency to internalise and personalise these things and make them a part of our identity.  You’re not a procrastinator.  You just have a habit of it that’s continually being reinforced.  And habits can be broken. Trigger (stress) pattern (to avoid) Reward (stress relief)

It’s self defeating behaviour - We know this to an extent, we know it doesn’t feel GOOD.  We beat ourselves up and the negative self talk can feel quite intense.  It’s like we enjoy punishing ourselves in some way. We blame, we shame, we feel guilt. But when you start to pick it apart and see it for what it is, it can start to make a lot of sense. what’s better,  thinking you lack effort, or ability? Not doing the thing often gives us GREAT reasons why not, WITHOUT it technically being our fault.

It’s a form of self sabotage.  We all have our ways to self sabotage.  Procrastination is just one of them.  I’ll go a little deeper into what’s at the core of this so you can learn to recognise it in yourself and make changes.

It’s a symptom of something deeper. Not the cause.

Fundamentally at its core it’s a stress response.  It’s stress relief!  Your brain thinks...You want me to do something that’s going to ADD to the stress? No way! Then you beat yourself up some more.

    What it’s not:
A time management issue.  You can’t simply solve procrastination with time management hacks.  Once you find the core reason behind the procrastination there are some where time management techniques WILL really help such as reframing your tasks to get you out of overwhelm and using techniques such as pomodoro. BUT, in most cases it’s nothing to do with time management at all.
Laziness or a lack of willpower..  A lot of the ways that we procrastinate involve doing a whole lot of nothing right.  Cat videos, scrolling, netflix, staring out the window, getting another snack.

What are triggers, and do you know yours?

In this context i’ll be talking more about the day to day emotional triggers we all experience to varying degrees rather than anything related to PTSD or shock trauma.

Triggers can be all sorts of things, smells (think your ex’s aftershave), sounds (a particular song), sights, behaviours, words. It can be internal, like a feeling or a memory for example.  Or they can be external like the sight or sound, even a particular person.

Often they come up when we watch something, read something, or someone says something in conversation and all of a sudden we’re in a super heightened emotional state.

Whether it’s sadness, anger, outrage or something else.

It’s usually totally out of proportion to what’s just happened. And even though to you it’s a big thing...other people may fail to understand why.

    You’ve been triggered.

Essentially triggers are something that ‘triggers’ a response in you.

An increase of a particular ‘symptom’, anxiety for example.

Triggers are linked to our beliefs and values, it can be a trauma response, it can be an ego response. Often from unmet needs as a child where we don’t have the capacity to really process the emotion.

It’s a mental reminder of something that triggers an emotional response.  Often a nice strong one leaving you with a bit of ‘what actually just happened there’.  Often accompanied by good old shame!

Your brain follows patterns, and the familiar. Which is why we end up habitually repeating the same behaviour. And why it’s hard to change it, until you make it more conscious.

Essentially at the core, your triggers are trying to protect you.

They’re trying to protect you and help you manage life’s ‘big feelings’.

For example, something may trigger anxiety in you.

Like posting on social media, you may be totally fine one minute, you know you WANT to post, because you feel you SHOULD post but you GO to post and you just can’t press go!

Your body is flooded with stress hormones and you can’t for the life of you work out why something so seemingly simple is so hard for you.

But it could be that being ‘visible’ is something that is ‘unsafe’ to you.  Perhaps you grew up with being told ‘children should be seen and not heard’ or being told off for being ‘attention seeking’ or something similar.

So you learn that keeping a low profile is what is ‘safe’. So your stress response is triggered when you try to step out from that. This might lead to avoidance altogether.

Not very handy when you want to have your own business!

It could also be, from the same childhood messaging, that people being super confident or ‘out there’ triggers a negative response in you.  It could be you feel you don’t like them, or make negative judgements of them because you were taught it was ‘bad’ to be that way.

These things we learn in childhood will always have an effect on our behaviour into adulthood and how they show up is completely individual to us.

But the more you can be aware of them the better.

Triggers can be really pesky and unconscious so you just don’t see it, I mean why would y
