The ninth grade History curriculum begins with study of some of the earliest human civilizations, including Sumer, Greece, Rome, and China, as well as societies in Africa and the Americas. Through an examination of the history of these cultures and societies students will build upon the eighth grade history class and develop a better understanding of how individuals and groups of people interacted with one another, including warfare, trade, and other forms of cultural exchange. Students are introduced to the frameworks of political, social/economic, and cultural/intellectual history, and compare and contrast how different societies organized their governments, economies, and cultural and artistic lives. Students will continue to practice their critical reading and writing skills by examining how historians and archeologists piece together information about the distant past and thinking critically about how we know what we know.
