Debbie Ridsdale was raised as one of three, in North London to a single parent. Excelling in Art and needlework at school, she always wanted to be an artist. Even as a young child she would make clothes for her sister and would ask the dressmaker down the road for her offcuts.

However, very little money denied her the possibility of going to art college. She married at just 17 and went on to have five children. In 1998, she won a national award of £10,000 for producing the most unusual room in Great Britain.

Now, she spends her time painting, designing her own clothes, visiting family and friends and very much misses having a garden.

Unlived Lives is a weekly podcast that inspires people to control their future, by understanding their past.
