#24 - Coming to Terms with Trauma and the Path to Recovery with Geoffrey Ahern Bottled Up

    • Mental Health

Sunny sits down with Geoffrey Ahern (@geoffreyahern), a senior mental health clinician from Melbourne with extensive experience across emergency and trauma, alcohol and other drug counselling. He currently works part-time in the Emergency Mental Health Response team in a large Emergency Department in Melbourne.
In our conversation, Geoffrey shares his story dealing with trauma after being sexually abused, dealing with the loss of a child and a marriage breakdown. It's a story of bravery and courage, as he shares how he has found recovery by giving back to others in the community through his work on the frontline.
Geoffrey was also part of PACER (Police, Ambulance and Clinical Early Response teams), a joint crisis response from police and mental health clinicians to people in crisis within the community. We touch on Geoffs time on the road with the police, and finish the discussion with Geoff sharing his transition to a plant-based diet and the role this has played on his mental health.
We recognise that some of the themes discussed in this episode can be confronting and have different effects on people, but having these conversations help push the dialogue in ensuring that these topics are normalised 3
