Mr. Craven goes through primary sources concerning President Abraham Lincoln's views of African-Americans, and their views of him, to evaluate his reputation as the "Great Emancipator."

Mr. Craven reviews the so-called "Era of Good Feelings:" the reasons why Americans felt so unified and positive during this period, and the myths that were at the foundation of those feelings. He also reveals why this period-- so widely reviled by the members of his department-- is among his favorite to teach. 

Mr. Craven reviews the major cases of the Supreme Court under the Chief Justiceship of John Marshall, discusses Marshall's potential motivations for what he accomplished, and relates the "midnight appointment" of Marshall to the current Supreme Court confirmation process in October 2021.
