Hi, I’m Dax Shepard, and I love talking to people. I am endlessly fascinated by the messiness of being human, and I find people who are vulnerable and honest about their struggles and shortcomings to be incredibly sexy. I invite you to join me as I explore other people’s stories. We will celebrate, above all, the challenges and setbacks that ultimately lead to growth and betterment. What qualifies me for such an endeavor? More than a decade of sobriety, a degree in Anthropology and four years of improv training. I will attempt to discover human “truths” without any laboratory work, clinical trials or data collection. I will be, in the great tradition of 16th-century scientists, an Armchair Expert.

Willem Dafoe (Poor Things, Platoon, The Lighthouse) is an actor. Willem joins the Armchair Expert to discuss how he doesn’t have the desire to buy things, how being raised by his siblings affected his perspective, and how his parents encouraged him to be ambitious in life. Willem and Dax talk about how one’s identity can be defined by social conditioning, how he loves collaborating with others on a project, and how he feels about playing big characters. Willem explains how good directors make the film process more enjoyable, how he feels about knowing too much about other actors, and what he thinks about being so recognizable.

Flightless Bird: American Accents
This week on Flightless Bird, David Farrier seeks to be better understood by his co-hosts by diving headfirst into the American accent. He meets with dialect coach Joel Goldes, who’s helped coach actors like Viola Davis through her various accent roles. As “The Dialect Coach” (www.thedialectcoach.com), Joel teaches David how to place his tongue to sound more American, and takes Farrier through what he’s been doing wrong. Monica, Rob, and David also take an accent quiz to see how good they are at picking American accents (which you can try at home too: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/juliafurlan/pahk-the-cah-nomaaaaaah)

Customer Reviews
Flightless bird and team
I love listening to David talk about all the things that make him or do not make him more American! It’s so relatable. I’m from Australia and each thing he has spoken about is the same for an Aussie. We have a lot of American shows on that it’s hard not to believe that every American is how we see them in the shows we watch. Like how Aussies own a Kangaroo as a pet 🤷🏻♀️
Seriously, separate it out into different feeds
Only want to listen to Flightless Bird for David and have zero interest in any of the other shows as the other hosts are painful. I’m sure there are many people in the same boat. Sure, keep the main feed for the couple of people interested in listening to everything, but it would be a much better experience if there was also a feed specific to Flightless Bird so I didn’t have to see everything else.
Disappointed
5 stars for flightless bird.
Although really disappointed that a statement was never made or nothing was ever said about the jvn interview - I gave dax the benefit of the doubt while listening to the interview but can’t believe after the fallout that the “ignore it and it will go away” approach has been taken. No longer a fan after years of listening as things appear completely different.
