The streets of wartime London are pitch black and the darkness offers cover to a murderer every bit as terrible as Jack the Ripper. During one awful week in February 1942 he viciously attacks women night after night. But the victims of the so-called Blackout Ripper are now all but forgotten. In this season of Bad Women, historian Hallie Rubenhold and criminologist Alice Fiennes share new details from the archives to tell the extraordinary and moving stories of the women who died and why their deaths were swept from view. And don't miss season one of Bad Women about a cold case like no other. In the fall of 1888, five women were brutally murdered in the slums of London. But everything you think you know about Jack the Ripper and those murdered women is wrong. Hallie reconstructs the lives of the five victims - revealing the appalling treatment they faced as women in the 1880s, and completely overturning the accepted Ripper story.

Gripping, masterful and poignant

I have steered away from true crime generally but it would be remiss to call this podcast that. Giving these crimes a social and historical context that returns ‘voice’ to the victims is very moving. The superb sound design that matches the observational story-telling is a master-stroke. Thank you for focussing on the injustice of fully-lived lives lost rather than giving over to a distorted fascination with the ‘macabre’.
Refreshing

Finally, a narrative that considers the lives and experiences of the women at the heart of this series of tragedies. Well narrated. A lot of effort has clearly been put into bringing both the women and the world in which they lived, to life.
Compelling, Complex and absolutely gripping

This is one of the most captivating podcasts I’ve listened to in a long time. Hallie and her production team do a wonderful job unfolding the lives of women in their complexity, social context and vulnerability. The production is excellent- i jumped to the side whilst jogging more than once as character voices came to life.
Brilliant

This is an incredible podcast, I was absolutely enthralled from the moment I pressed play. What an eye-opening experience, it made me want to know more from the minute I was done. I recommend this to everyone I know. Can easily say I’m a fan of both Hallie and Alice now. Hopeful that a season 3 is in the works!
