    In this bonus episode, we have Dr Lauren Bruce, and Georgie Buckley discuss eating disorders and how it affects sport at all levels.

    Dr Lauren Bruce:
    Lauren Bruce (she/her) is the Education and Research Manager at Eating Disorders Victoria. Lauren completed her Doctor of Psychology (Health) at Deakin University, with her research focusing on the relationship between disordered eating and intuitive eating in Australian women. She is also a registered Psychologist and a Research Fellow with the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University. Lauren has worked as part of the EDV Education team since 2017, delivering education, training, and psychoeducation programs for professionals, people with eating disorders, carers, and the general community.
    Georgie Buckley:
    Georgie Buckley (she/her) is a PhD Candidate and Dietitian at Swinburne University of Technology located in Melbourne. Her PhD and research is exploring current and former athletes relationship with both food and body, including disordered eating and body image. Georgie completed her Bachelor of Science at The University of Melbourne and has completed Masters degrees at Latrobe University and Deakin University. Georgie has experience working as both an eating disorder and sports dietitian in private practice and sporting organisations.  Georgie has worked with Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, The Victorian Institute of Sport and Essendon Football Club.

    Georgie is passionate about helping individuals develop a positive relationship with food, from an inclusive and non-judgemental perspective. Georgie’s style of nutritional counselling is client centred, kind and compassionate. She is often found myth busting diet culture and advocating for weight inclusive healthcare or equality in sport whilst practising with a Health at Every Size® approach. Georgie has a specific interest in the interrelationship between food and body and specifically that of sport and exercise. As a former athlete herself, Georgie understands the value in nourishing and fuelling the body to perform and function optimally.

    In our latest episode, Michelle and Ryan chatted with  Monique Hanley about her role as a Change our Game Ambassador. 

    Monique is a passionate advocate for equity in cycling, having previously chaired Cycling Australia’s Women’s Commission and Cycling Victoria’s Women and Girls’ Commission. She has experience in driving many policy changes within cycling including leading Victoria to become the first region in the world to mandate equal prize money in 2013.

    In our latest episode, Brenton and Amelia chatted with Mitch Whelan and Sue-Ann Harrington from the Sale To Sea Disability Kayak Challenge. The wonderful team at Sale To Sea have provided opportunities for People with a Disability (PwD) to engage within their kayaking challenges for 11 years now, and have very keenly jumped on board for GippSport’s All Abilities Physical Activity Challenge.

    During the week of Monday the 7th to Sunday the 13th of September, GippSport is encouraging People with a Disability to be active and get some exercise!     Tips on Staying Active with VicHealth

    Michelle and Gene had the pleasure of catching up with Matt Cameron who is the Senior Project Officer, in the Physical Activity and Sport Team at VicHealth.  Matt has been with VicHealth since 2011 and in this time he has worked collaboratively with Regional Sports Assemblies, State Sporting Associations, community sport clubs and other partners to provide more opportunities for Victorians to be physically active In this episode we get the pleasure to pick his brain and have a chat around active recreation trends and also get an insight into his knowledge of the Doing Sport Differently Project VicHealth have been leading. 

    They also discussed ways of staying active at a time when many winter sports had been cancelled. GippSport’s Virtual Physical Activity Challenge is one way, with the next one to run on the weekend of August 15 & 16.  Michelle and Gene explain how you can sign up and reveal the great prizes on offer.

    Inclusive Sport with Collingwood FC

    Inclusive Sport with Collingwood FC

    Brendan Stroud has a chat to GippSport’s Amelia and Brenton about all things inclusive sport. Brendan is currently working at the Collingwood Football Club as an inclusion development officer and has a wealth of knowledge within the disability sport sector. This includes participation at an elite level representing Australia in wheelchair tennis and as a member of the Australian wheelchair basketball team. Brendan’s newest sporting challenge has been as the captain/coach of Collingwood FC’s wheelchair AFL team, of which they were premiers in the first year of the competition. He touches on the importance of sport for physical and in particular looking after your mental wellbeing. Sport has saved his life and in his words “given him a reason to breathe."

    Tackle Your Feelings

    GippSport Program Coordinators, Ryan Evans and Brenton Dinsdale discuss mental health and the benefits that participating in organized sport can have on an individual’s physical and mental health. Later in the program, special guests Nick Walsh and Brendan McCartney, discuss the Tackle Your Feelings program, which is a mental health training program for Community AFL Football & Netball Clubs.

    𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝗪𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐡
    Nick is from Ireland, moving to Melbourne at the age of 17 to play Aussie Rules Footy. He spent 3 years on the list of the Melbourne Football Club before returning to Ireland and playing/captaining County Team, Cavin for 9 years. Nick also represented Ireland in International Rules football, against Australia, before returning to Oz in 2011 where he coached at the Giants, in Sydney, for 7 years. Through Nick’s playing and professional career, he has dealt with the roller coaster of pressures that this professional industry portrays; and certainly understands how pressure can have a negative effect on peoples’ mental health. Nick joins us today as a Program Manager for the Tackle Your Feelings program;

    𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐜𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐲
    Many of us would remember Brendan as the senior coach of the Western Bulldogs between 2012 & 2014. Brendan started coaching at the Newtown & Chilwell Football Netball Club before being appointed as the head coach at Ocean Grove. Here, he guided the senior team to four consecutive Bellarine Football League premierships from 1994 until 1997. In 1998, he took a role with AFL club Richmond as assistant and development coach and then, from 2000 to 2010, he was an assistant coach with the Geelong Football Club, before moving to be the forward line coach at Essendon in 2011. Shortly after the conclusion of the 2011 AFL season, Brendan was appointed as the new senior coach of the Western Bulldogs. Brendan joins us today as a facilitator of the Tackle Your Feelings program.
