Bird's Eye View is an unofficial Orioles podcast from the perspective of two die-hard fans. Here, we experience the ups and downs of Orioles baseball, and do our fair share of praising and mocking our beloved team. Our position from the cheap seats helps provide that “Bird’s Eye View.” What we bring is perspective. We offer content that will entertain, (very) occasionally inform, and more often than not, validate a little homerism. When it comes to the Orioles, this is your official source for a lack of insight, and baseless opinion.

    8th Annual BEVy Awards

    Welcome to the BEVys!

Wait, what is this? Why is our annual mid-season awards show coming out after the season has ended? Because Bird’s Eye View, baseball, and human existence as we know it is weird, right now.

But, if you’re willing to push through it, so are we. With that being said, we present our 8th Annual BEVy Awards.

What are the BEVys, you ask? The BEVys are a mid-season awards show in which we (and some of our friends in the Bird-O’s-sphere) hand out faux awards. You see, there is no real hardware, and no one is there to accept. The BEVys are a little bit like Who’s Line Is It, Anyway in the fact that the games are made up and the points don’t matter.

    The Presenters

This year’s show features appearances by other fantastic content creators in the Bird-Os-Sphere:

    The Awards…

The 8th Annual BEVy Awards feature the following awards:

    * The Hey Keith Law, Turns Out This Orioles Prospect Isn’t So Bad Award* The Whose Fault Is It We’re Not In the Playoffs Award* The Most Impressive Moment of the 2020 Season Award* The That Seals the Deal Award* The Best Hair Award* The Which Orioles Top Prospect Makes Me Look Like A Toddler Award* The Nickname Audit Award* The Steve Pearce Award* The That’s So 2020 Award* The Most Hated Playing for the Orioles Award* The Overlooked Oriole Award

    Many Thanks!

The BEVys provides us an excellent opportunity to stop and smell the roses. We enjoy producing this podcast beyond measure, and we have many people to thank for making the effort possible, and for making it so much fun. Please know that there are too many people not listed here that are vital to what we do, and ensuring that we laugh so hard along the way. We apologize for not mentioning everyone by name (but the show is already long enough).

That being said, we would like to thank:

    * The “Voice of the BEVys,” Jovial Jay Shepard.* The many contributors to this show, and collaborators in the Bird-O’s-Sphere, at large. It seems that all the people we meet who create Orioles content online are generous with their time and talents, and know how to have a good time.* OBP Apparel, for our sweet logo.* The artists who provide our show music on a weekly basis:Songs from the Moon – Watching the Orioles (Bird’s Eye View theme song)* Black Dog Prowl – No...

Hi. We hope this episode finds you well – in good health and good spirits.

The Orioles are making roster moves, and making it look like they need a couple payday cash advances. As always, it’s an interesting time to be an Orioles fan.

    Nondollars and Nonsense

MASN announced serious cuts to its broadcast schedule and on-air talent (for both the Orioles and the Nationals. This move has many components: tit-for-tat for the on-going legal dispute, COVID-19 related cashflow issues, and emotional connections to broadcasters who are suddenly disconnected from the team.

We can’t say enough how much we’ll miss Gary Thorne. We had it good, and we knew it. On the other hand, the overall stable of broadcasting talent is strong. It’s possible that Orioles fans will be in good hands for quite some time.

More troubling news on the financial front: the Orioles are asking arbitration-eligible players like Trey Mancini and Anthony Santander to defer money on their deals totaling less than $5M. This is… disconcerting.

    FIRST BASE: Roster Stuff

We got Roster Stuff, y’all. The Orioles are DFAing players (both talented and not), they’re completing trades, they’re engaging in the Rule 5 Draft. This 2021 team is going to look somewhat different… with very similar results.

One of the interesting notes about the Rule 5 Draft this season is that the Orioles lost some players. We discuss the significance of this, and wonder what it says about the status of the rebuilt.

We also don’t care to learn how to pronounce the name Sceroler. Call us crazy, but we’re not convinced we’ll need to learn it.

SECOND BASE: The Ongoing Chris Davis Saga

This is just sad. All around Good Dude Chris Davis is a Bad Ballplayer. And it’s bumming us out. Some of his quotes this week were easy to let get under your skin.

This is year six of the seven-year megadeal. So… yay…

    THIRD BASE: 2021 Promotional Schedule

The 2021 Promotional Schedule is here, which means one thing: most of this crap is left over from what they would have offered in 2020.

There’s no debate: the Orioles season has come to a close.

So, we take this opportunity to review what the 2020 season was, and what it might mean for the future. We were pretty convinced we wouldn’t get a full 60-game season, due to COVID-19, and we are delighted to have been so mistaken. This team was, at times, incredibly entertaining.

    FIRST BASE: 2020 in Review

Orioles fans enjoyed the audacity of hope until the Birds went all Dark Ages in New York. The team had pulled itself within half a game of the playoff hunt, and then… the wheels came off.

There were downs, but there were also a lot of ups, and baseball – as weird as it was in 2020 – was just what we needed.

SECOND BASE: Anthony Santander – your 2020 MVO

The Orioles beat writes selected Anthony Santander as the Most Valuable Oriole. We walk through that decision and review the pros and cons, as well as looking at other candidates who deserved recognition.

Spoiler Alert: it wasn’t DJ Stewart.

    THIRD BASE: The Outfield Picture

At the outset of the season, Jake did a lot of whining about how thin the Orioles were in the outfield. How could a team legitimately miss Stevie Wilkerson, noted outfielder?

At this juncture, the picture looks much different. We take a look at who stepped up, and who will play in the grass in 2021.

We missed last week, as the return of at-home education rocked the English and Magness households. As our personal worlds were rocked, so too, were those of Orioles fans.

What the ACTUAL HECK is going on with DJ Stewart? Look, we’ve said some pretty heinous things about him, and this might still just be a flash in the pan, but man… this is some fun baseball to watch.

Also, what the ACTUAL HECK is going on with Cedric Mullins? Is this stretch of entertaining ball a sign that he has pulled his career out of the absolute rock bottom he experienced in 2019?

Hi. We hope this episode finds you well – in good health and good spirits.

After a way-too-eventful week on the field, the Orioles have a very eventful trade deadline. This week was certainly exciting. We talk about how that should make us feel.

Here’s what’s going on in the world of Orioles Baseball, in 280 characters, or fewer:

We’ve seen an increase in ‘copypasta,’ an attempt by many accounts to copy, paste, and Tweet the same phrase. 🍝🔁When we see this behavior, we may limit the visibility of the Tweets. https://t.co/OCVudJPXPm— Twitter Comms (@TwitterComms) August 27, 2020

That seals the deal. I am no longer an Orioles fan. I’ve been a fan since 1982 and a season ticket holder since 1996. I officially will not be renewing my plan next season nor will I watch on tv ever again. Elias is officially the worst gm in history.— Will Shiflett (@will61375) July 13, 2019

    Ch ch ch ch changes

In the preceding weeks, Jake has been predicting a quiet trade deadline, not just for the Orioles, but for baseball as a whole.

Welp. He was lots of wrong.

The Orioles unloaded the cupboard, and brought in a surprising haul of prospects and players to be named later. The Birds are clearly still in a talent acquisition mode, and… we’re OK with that.

    Around the Bases

    FIRST BASE

After putting Jake to shame in the first segment, we turn the microscope on Scott, as we revisit the subject of whether Ryan Mountcastle – and specifically his power – is disappointing at the Major League level.

    SECOND BASE

How do you solve a problem like Rio Ruiz? Is this a blip, a slump, or a regression to an inevitable mean?

    THIRD BASE

Where are the Orioles going to get innings? After dealing Tommy Milone, and much of the value in the bullpen, how are they going to keep from tearing the arms off of the arms that are left?

    HOME PLATE

Are they who we thought they were? The Orioles have “cooled” since their 12-8 start. Are they this bad? Will they ever be 12-8 good again?
