Lightbulb Moment 14: Levi Roots, founder of Reggae Reggae Sauce on how to find who you truly are

How do you know who you truly are? It’s one of life's hardest questions isn’t it, and is a quest that can often only be solved with time and perseverance as we explore life’s path.

This week’s lightbulb moment was sparked by Holly’s live interview with Levi Roots. Renowned for founding Reggae Reggae Sauce, Levi shares his experience of growing up, not truly knowing who he was or what his purpose might be – and reveals how changing his name, changed the direction of his life.

Their conversation really triggered a lightbulb moment for Holly as she began to reflect on who she became throughout her business journey founding notonthehighstreet, and how by focusing on everything other than you, can often mean that you lose your authentic self along the way.

Holly shares the hurdles and flaws she has had to overcome, in order to really understand who she is and explains why it’s so important to not only know, but also love yourself – especially when you are such a key part of your brand.

It certainly hasn’t been an easy ride for Holly or Levi, but for anyone feeling a little lost with their identity, this is a moment that we think might just help you on your path to finding happiness – which comes from knowing your true self.

As one of ten very special episodes, Holly is also joined by Tash Grossman, founder of Slip and member of Dell’s Women's Entrepreneur Network, who has shared her very own Lightbulb Moment, too.

From taking baby steps to building a global brand, with Guy Schanschieff MBE, co founder of Bambino Mio

From taking baby steps to building a global brand, with Guy Schanschieff MBE, co founder of Bambino Mio

Little did Guy and Jo Schanschieff know that a chance conversation at the Taj Mahal in 1991 would spark an idea that changed their lives forever. With Bambino Mio now being the largest reusable nappy brand in the world, Guy Schanschieff MBE shares with Holly the highs and lows of their epic adventure to do business for good.

Their mission to eliminate single use plastics from nappy production, before the rise of the internet and the conscious consumer, hasn’t always been easy. However with 90 billion nappies being thrown away every single year, and 1% of all plastic production being used to make single use nappies, we really do have to commend Guy and Jo for their sheer determination, belief in their product and ability to remain agile enough to enforce change.

Not only does Guy share key stats and figures that explain the importance of consumer choices on the environment, but he also depicts some life changing advice that he learnt when overcoming some of Bambino Mio’s incredible challenges as the business has evolved.

Today, over 20 years later, after a wedding, three children, over 100 awards and selling in over 50 countries worldwide, Bambino Mio is a brand that we must all support, along with the incredible founders behind it. This is a conversation that encourages taking risks, having confidence and remaining committed to your vision. It’s a ‘must listen’ to take a step towards a better future.

Lightbulb Moment 13: Why female intuition in business is where the gold lies, with Marcia Kilgore, founder of Beauty Pie

Lightbulb Moment 13: Why female intuition in business is where the gold lies, with Marcia Kilgore, founder of Beauty Pie

Crushed? Overwhelmed? Scared? The more hardship you go through, the more resilient you become — but also, the more you are able to be open about what you are feeling, the more likely you are to connect with others — and that is what great brands are built on.

It’s what founder of Bliss Spas, Fitflop and now Beauty Pie, Marcia Kilgore has come to believe too, so perhaps it’s little surprise she’s built so many incredible businesses.

Reading a letter to her younger self, Marcia speaks in great depth about emotion when recalling her life so far, and this struck a real chord with Holly.

Having been ridiculed in the past for being an ‘emotional’ person, Holly shares her learnings throughout her career about using emotion to achieve success. After all, why does being emotional have negative connotations? Is being an emotional being, not the greatest gift of all? Especially when marketing to women. Making connections doesn’t come through being aloof, functional or formal. It’s about being brave enough to bring your full self to work and sharing this with others.

This truly is a lightbulb moment not to be missed, as Holly reveals why having the ability to feel, act and channel our emotions just might be the key to not only understanding yourself, but also your business and most importantly — your customers.

How to take control of your happiness, with Mo Gawdat

How to take control of your happiness, with Mo Gawdat

Mo Gawdat had it all. An illustrious 30 year career in tech, serving as the Chief Business Officer of Google X, all the money he needed and more, and was happily married with two children. However despite his many riches, he never felt completely satisfied. Fascinated by his lack of fulfilment and with his passion for technology, Mo began building an algorithm for happiness.

Then, after the sudden and devastating loss of his son Ali, Mo turned to his calculation for happiness to make it through the darkest period of his life, and soon swore to honour Ali’s death, by helping one billion people to become happier.

Now a best selling author and public speaker, Mo’s expertise on achieving happiness is captivating, as he shares his theory that we are all born with happiness as our ‘default state’, but it is the circumstances or choices we make whilst growing up that create unhappiness from within.

Mo also discusses his second area of expertise  —  the rise of Artificial Intelligence  —  and how by just 2029, the smartest being on planet earth won’t be a human. A topic that can often be difficult to comprehend, Mo explains what AI is, and most importantly why we must learn to coexist alongside it.

Discussing the art of practising gratitude, accepting grief and also revealing his secret formula of how to unlock a life that is 99% joyful, this truly is an unmissable episode, which Holly swears has already completely changed her life.

Lightbulb Moment 12: How to lead, with Will Butler Adams OBE, CEO of Brompton Bikes

Lightbulb Moment 12: How to lead, with Will Butler Adams OBE, CEO of Brompton Bikes

How do you lead a team to success, inspiring every single person and empowering them to deliver their work to the very best of their ability?

In this episode, Will Butler Adams, CEO of Brompton Bikes shares not only his ethos to leadership, but exactly how to implement it — and it really gets Holly thinking.

Her approach to leadership has changed and developed immensely over her 20 year career. Is 28-year-old Holly who founded notonthehighstreet, the same Holly who now leads the small business movement in the UK today? Hardly.

Hear her thoughts on how, as small businesses grow from being a team of one or two, to what might one day be a workforce of many, it’s vital to evolve your leadership style as you go.

Far from being a dark art or a skill someone is born with, Will believes the key to unlocking your leadership potential ultimately comes from the culture you are building within your business. Whether you have just one member or staff or 100, his tangible approach is inspiring and achievable for us all. No wonder Holly was so impressed.

Lightbulb Moment 11: MOBO Awards founder Kanya King CBE on why the greatest gift to anyone starting a business is naivety

How do you build a brand that for the first time celebrates an entire genre with no money, no previous experience and just six weeks? What empowers you to pick up the phone and call Sir Tony Blair or Sir Richard Branson? Where on earth do you get the guts to remortgage your home to back your business?

Listening to founder of the MOBO Awards, Kanya King CBE, Holly realises that passion and drive can count for more than all the experience in the world when it comes to building a successful brand.

In this Lightbulb Moment, Kanya shares her extraordinary self-belief and personal mantras that would see her shine against the odds, and Holly reflects on her own journey building notonthehighstreet. Inspiration at my fingertips!

Thank you so much Holly for this wonderful podcast. I have absolutely no idea how I found it but it is one of those ‘meant to be’ discoveries for sure. Nice to hear what goes on in the UK too, different but the same, from what we experience here in Australia. Looking forward to going through you entire back catalogue! Don’t you love the technology that makes all this possible? 😍

With love from Freo, Western Australia

Where do I start? As an British expat and lover of all things independent now living and running my own indie business here in Fremantle, Western Australia. I look forward everyday to catching up on the latest from your incredible conversations over there in good old Blighty. After hitting a bit of a rut with our little shop and scared by what was coming at the start of convid we closed our bricks and mortar back in April and have switched back to wholesale and an online format. Little did we know Rona never really hit Western Australia and we have witnessed lots of other local businesses thrive during this time. Our ‘force to rethink by ourselves’ pause is allowing an exciting new space to regrow and rethink. Yes our income has halved as a result but we still believe we made the correct decision. Your conversations is aiding this space perfectly and we are busy hatching new ideas for our next chapter in the Indie work. Thanks so much Holly and Co you really are inspirational. I even feel inspired to write a letter to my younger self. ☺️❤️ with Love from Freo xxxx Trudy and Andy

Thankyou Holly

I feel it’s more than a coincidence I found these amazing podcasts whilst navigating my painting career, homeschooling and the second lockdown. Listening to Holly and her amazing guests I’m feeling so inspired. I’m a British RCA graduate painting my best life in Australia with my family. If I was in still in London I feel I would be visiting “Holly and Co” rather a lot! A beautiful voice to listen to full of energy, compassion and genuine passion for everyone she talks to. Thankyou 🙏❤️
