Episode 98: Functional Medicine Expert Dr. Will Cole

Episode 98: Functional Medicine Expert Dr. Will Cole

In today’s episode, I’m speaking with leading functional medicine expert Dr. Will Cole, whose work I appreciate and respect so very much. Dr. Cole has been named one of the top 50 functional-medicine and integrative doctors in the nation, and specializes in clinically investigating underlying factors of chronic disease and customizing a functional medicine approach for his patients.

Dr. Cole is also the bestselling author of Ketotarian (https://drwillcole.com/ketotarian), The Inflammation Spectrum (https://drwillcole.com/the-inflammation-spectrum), and his latest book Intuitive Fasting (https://drwillcole.com/intuitive-fasting), in which he shows how to use the powerful benefits of flexible intermittent fasting to gain metabolic flexibility and find food peace.

There is truly so much to glean from my conversation with Dr. Cole, but here are some of my favorite takeaways:
When it comes to your health, remember that “common” does not mean “normal.” Each individual’s health issues are individual and should be addressed as such. Intermittent fasting keeps your metabolism more flexible and can lead to renewed health by teaching the individual to take control of their hunger by becoming more mindful about how and when you eat.  What works for you today might not work for you a year from now, so make sure to check in with your body and modify your approach to health as needed. Healthy living is believing in self-care as self-respect, and living so that you can achieve both.

    Episode 97: K Aleisha Fetters

    Episode 97: K Aleisha Fetters

If you’re a wellness practitioner who dreams of sharing your expertise in articles for major outlets or in a book of your own, you will want to tune into this podcast episode! I’m chatting with K. Aleisha Fetters, a widely-published author (Give Yourself MORE and Fitness Hacks for Over 50 are the two books she wrote in 2020!) and certified strength and conditioning specialist about how to identify and reach your ideal readers so that you can translate your passion for wellness into writing.

There are so many important insights K. Aleisha shared during our chat, but here are some of my favorites:
Life is about relationships and connections, so make the most of them personally and professionally. When pitching your article idea to an editor, demonstrate your familiarity with the publication’s readers and writing style, and keep your pitch direct and brief. When writing a book, make sure you’re passionate about your topic (you’ll be spending a lot of time thinking and writing about it!) and set yourself up for success by scheduling time blocks of 4-5 hours where your writing has your undivided attention. Healthy living means making conscious choices to take care of yourself physically, emotionally and mentally.

Episode 96: Lifeway Foods CEO & President Julie Smolyansky

Episode 96: Lifeway Foods CEO & President Julie Smolyansky

I think you’re going to really enjoy hearing from my inspiring podcast guest. I’m speaking with
Julie Smolyansky, who is the President and CEO of Lifeway Foods, Inc. Julie made history when she became the youngest female CEO of a publicly held firm when she took over Lifeway Foods at the age of 27. Since then, Julie has continued the company’s growth trajectory with creative product development and marketing, bringing kefir into the United States mainstream and boosting annual company revenues to over $100 million. Julie is also the author of a beautiful cookbook titled, The Kefir Cookbook: An Ancient Healing Superfood for Modern Life and Recipes from My Family Table and Around the World, where she shares over 100 sweet and savory recipes made with kefir.

My conversation with Julie shone a light on so many interesting things, but here are some of my favorites:
The health benefits of kefir are impressive, and they extend beyond gut health. Kefir -- a 2,000 year old probiotic yogurt drink -- supports our mental health as well by suppressing anxiety, stress and depression. The process of healing is an ongoing journey; it’s not about diet, but rather about feeling good inside and out, and making good choices about your wellness. Food can serve as a unifier, as it tells a story that transcends time. Health living means feeling good about how you treat yourself and your body, physically and mentally.
Want to learn more about the many health benefits of kefir? You can connect with Julie and Lifeway via the Lifeway Foods, Inc.website (https://lifewaykefir.com/), Lifeway’s Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/lifewaykefir/), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/LifewayKefir), Twitter (https://twitter.com/lifeway_kefir?lang=en), Julie’s Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/juliesmolyansky/), and Julie’s book The Kefir Cookbook: An Ancient Healing Superfood for Modern Life and Recipes from My Family Table and Around the World (https://www.amazon.com/Kefir-Cookbook-Ancient-Healing-Superfood/dp/0062651307/ref=asc_df_0062651307/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312069235624&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13909804341371986398&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9013457&hvtargid=pla-464841057094&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=58874700621&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=312069235624&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13909804341371986398&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9013457&hvtargid=pla-464841057094).

    Episode 95: Heather Chauvin

    Episode 95: Heather Chauvin

Today’s remarkable podcast guest is Heather Chauvin, a leadership coach who has dedicated her career to helping ambitious and overwhelmed women conquer their fears and become leaders at work and home. In addition to her coaching business, Heather is also the host of Mom Is In Control Podcast, where she guides women to create the life they actually want.

As you’ll hear from our chat, Heather shares so many insights into living a fulfilling and happy life, but here are some of my favorites:
Don’t wait for a life-changing diagnosis to make a change in your life -- think about what you need and want to feel alive, and go after it. Ask for what you want and remember that if we don’t know what we need, no one else knows what we need. One of life’s important skills is being able to listen to others rather than being an expert all the time. Healthy living means knowing that you are perfectly created and aligned, and that off days are ok.

Episode 94: How much protein do you need?

Episode 94: How much protein do you need?

As a dietitian and health coach, I get a lot of questions about how much protein one should consume, so I wanted to record this solo podcast to share some insight with you. Interestingly, I hear from people on both sides of the protein-eating spectrum: there are those who try to consume as much protein as possible, while others limit their intake. No matter where you are in your protein-consumption, there are some important things to know:

Protein makes up the building blocks of our organs, muscles, skin, and hormones; our body needs protein for healthy living and to maintain and repair tissues.  Protein helps us meet our needs for the essential amino acids we need to get from food. Whether you eat meat or opt for a vegetarian or vegan diet, there are a variety of protein sources from which you can choose. Various life and health stages impact our need for protein.
Hungry for more? In addition to the podcast, you can also check out my book, The Little Book of Game-Changers: 50 Healthy Habits For Managing Stress & Anxiety, where I have a chapter dedicated to protein intake.

Episode 93: Semaine Health Co-Founders Lauren Lee-Crane and Catherine Lee

Episode 93: Semaine Health Co-Founders Lauren Lee-Crane and Catherine Lee

Today I’m chatting with twin sisters Lauren Lee-Crane and Catherine Lee, co-founders of Semaine Health. Lauren and Catherine have made it their work’s mission to help improve women’s health through education about periods and period pain. Semaine, their period vitamin, is formulated with nine super-powered plant extracts and minerals that lower the inflammation in your body when you need it the most.

It is Lauren and Catherine’s hope that Semaine can help give women healthier, happier periods.

In their effort to normalize conversations about women’s bodies and periods, Lauren and Catherine touched on so many important topics, but here are some of my favorite takeaways from our chat:
The connection between inflammation and period pain is significant and should not be overlooked; The idea that women are supposed to experience pain during their period is wrong; just because period pain is common, does not mean it should remain that way; Women of color are at a significant disadvantage when it comes to pain and health issues; Healthy living means being connected to your body, how it feels, and what makes it feel good, and also not striving for perfection.
If you want to learn more about the work Lauren and Catherine do, you can connect with them via Semaine Health (https://www.semainehealth.com/), Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/semainehealth/), and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/semainehealth).
