A team from UCL Earth Sciences is taking part in a project that involves drilling into an active volcano in southern Italy. Scientists will deploy sensors in a 4km-deep borehole and analyse recovered rock as they try to determine what risk the volcano poses to people living nearby and whether it could be a source of geothermal energy.
