Professor Jana Matthews is the ANZ Chair in Business Growth and Director of the Centre for Business Growth (CBG) at the University of South Australia's Business School. Professor Matthews helps CEOs, executives and directors unlock their organisation's growth potential, develop and execute plans for growth, attract and retain talent, develop products and services that meet customer's needs, and improve their leadership effectiveness.
Professor Matthews graduated from Earlham College in Indiana with a major in literary criticism, studied at the University of London (Birkbeck College), did graduate work at Yale University and has been awarded an interdisciplinary Masters Degree from the University of Rhode Island and a Doctorate in Management and Planning from Harvard. She has extensive industry experience as a growth consultant for many clients and several ventures including Managing Director of ANZ Innovyz START, President and CEO of Boulder Quantum Ventures, and CEO of the Jana Matthews Group for the last 15 years.
As one of the original senior team members of the Kauffman Foundation's Centre for Entrepreneurial Leadership, Professor Matthews designed the highly successful Kauffman Fellows Program as a two-year accelerated "apprenticeship" in venture capital. She also developed Learning Programs for High Growth Entrepreneurs, which enabled CEOs and Executive teams to learn how to lead and manage growth. She was instrumental in the development of programs to support technology transfer, commercialisation of innovation, and teach high net worth individuals how to be angel investors. Professor Matthews has been identified as one of 18 Women Business Gurus in the world - and the only one focused on entrepreneurial leadership and business growth. She was invited to membership in the International Women's Forum (IWF), and was a finalist in the White House Fellows Program. She has published eight books and over 50 articles, several DVDs, tools and a blog with the goal of helping CEOs and executive teams lead and manage people to high performance and accelerate the growth of companies.
Professor Matthews is frequently asked to speak and consult about leading and managing growth, globalisation, innovation, and the roles and responsibilities of leaders in growing companies, and does so across the globe. In 2005 she was invited by the US Department of Commerce and the People's Republic of China to speak about company growth in Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an, and was then invited back to teach in the MBA program at Peking University. In 2006 and 2007 she was Visiting Professor at the Business School at the University of Auckland. In 2008 she was a Global Thought Leader for SAP in Asia Pacific and worked with growth companies in India, Singapore, Malaysia and China. In 2009 she was the keynote at the Global Entrepreneurship Conference in Kuala Lumpur. In 2011 she moved to Adelaide, but continues to consult with companies in the US.
