Ep 8. Emotional safety and interconnectedness in education with Firdaws Ismail Teaching With Soul

    • Self-Improvement

Today’s interview is a beautifully rich, deep and hope filled conversation with the magical Firdaws Ismail.

Firdaws is a mother to two beautiful children. She returned to school after having her children and graduated with a bachelor's in Child and Adolescent Development. She then earned her preliminary credentials in Mild and Moderate Special Education. She worked as a second-grade teaching assistant at a Private Islamic School. During this time, she witnessed the damage done when schools focus on performance at the cost of the emotional wellness of their students and staff.

She is a proponent of a holistic approach to education. Her mission is to help schools reclaim their joy and prioritize emotional wellness with a focus on empathy, connection, and belonging. She firmly believes that schools can flourish but only when they prioritize emotional safety, the most basic of our human needs.

In this episode, Jess and Firdaws speak about:

·  Firdaws’ journey within the education system and how feeling emotionally suffocated, unexpressed and experiencing somatic symptoms mirroring her inner feelings led to her leaving the industry

·  Her experience growing up as a refugee and fleeing from her home in Somalia and how that has impacted her life

·  How her vivid imagination was the key to knowing there had to be another way

·  Her belief that we are all interconnected and why it’s so important for everyone in a school to feel as if they have a voice that is valued

·  The importance of remembering a person’s humanity as opposed to simply acknowledging their output and performance

·  Firdaw’s views on how to create emotional safety in schools, mutual respect between teachers and school leaders and how to make time to connect with your students

·  Plus so much more!
