Episode 1: About de Groots. An introduction with Margot and John De Groot

The Wills and Estates Transmission

John and Margot de Groot founded the DeGroote law firm in 1986, motivated by family circumstances and a long-term plan to work together.

The firm started as John K DeGroote and Co. before becoming DeGroote and Co. on July 1, 1986.

John transitioned from academia at QUT to focus on full-time legal practice, though he maintained some teaching involvement.

The firm expanded to become a national firm with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, aiming to differentiate itself by specializing in wills and estates.

Margot de Groot was recognized with an Order of Australia medal for her contributions to the law, supporting women in business, and philanthropic efforts.

Both John and Margot had opportunities to work at law firms in New York and London but chose to remain focused on growing their practice in Australia.

The firm has been involved in efforts to achieve greater uniformity in succession laws across Australian states, which have historically been challenging.

Margot's experience studying at Harvard was transformative and led to further international connections and learning opportunities.
