How To Put Your Own Oxygen Mask On First Without Feeling Guilty

    Are you burnt out?

In last week's podcast I spoke about the trends I am seeing in my Psychology research around burnout in working women and specifically how it's impacting working mums.

In this week's episode, we continue this conversation but shift focus toward what the psychology says about why you feel so exhausted, why it needs your urgent attention and what you can do to start putting your own oxygen mask on first and without guilt.

Why We Need To Support Working Mums In Putting Their Own Oxygen Masks On First

Why We Need To Support Working Mums In Putting Their Own Oxygen Masks On First

    Working mums are burnt out.

    I'm pissed off.
    I'm frustrated.
    I'm sad.
And I'm not going to be silent any longer.

What I am seeing in my work with professional working mums is disturbing and something has to be done.

I have spent the last eight weeks interviewing dozens of women who have reached out to me off the back of social posts I have shared around an alarming trend in working women around pervasive burnout.

There have been so many tears, so many cries for help, stories of needing to see a Psychologist and having to wait 5 months, significant weight gain, suicidal thoughts, 10 to 12 hours days attached to a Zoom screen, not moving from a desk other than to grab a quick tea and discs bulging out of necks as a result, and many of these women have contemplated or quit their highly-paid jobs.

I was so disturbed that I had to dig deeper, so, I chose to write my most recent psychology paper on the impacts of COVID-19 on working mums.

In this week's podcast, I want to share it with you and at the end, I'm going to offer up a couple of simple actions you can take if you are one of these working mums I speak of.

Stories Of Transformation | Part 1

Stories Of Transformation | Part 1

Real stories from real people. What comes to your mind when you think of the word transformation?

For me, it's a visual of a little caterpillar one day deciding its time, so she spins her little cocoon to encase herself and soon after reappears as a beautiful butterfly. Transformed into the next iteration of who she wants to be, it's intentional and it's beautiful.

Whilst I love this visual I know all too well the truth of transformation. It's messy, it's uncertain, uncomfortable, it requires failure, experimentation, persistence and resilience. This is why so many of us spend our lives longing for it but never take the leap into living.

I've created this week's podcast for anyone who finds themselves stuck in the void between intention and action and unable to find the right path to progress their dreams.

So many people reach out to me asking where did you start? How did you know it would work? What one action had the greatest impact? They want to know the how of making change so that they can find the confidence to step into the life they long for. That's why this week I want to bring to you stories of transformation from everyday people, people like you and I who have stepped into the unknown, embraced failure and realised happiness they never thought possible as a result. I want to share their diverse stories in the hope that it might inspire you to take just one action that moves you from frustrated to fulfilled so that you can show up wholeheartedly in life as who you really are!

So, grab a pen and paper and strap yourself in. There is wisdom in their words and inspiration in their actions.

    The Secret To Realising Possibility

    The Secret To Realising Possibility

Make progress towards possible. I've been spending a lot of time reflecting of late on what in my transformation journey has been most impactful in propelling me forward. Moving me closer to what I term a growth lifestyle. A lifestyle that is in alignment with how I want to show up and enjoy this wild and wonderful experience that is life.

It's that reflection that was the catalyst for this podcast which I have to say surprised and delighted me in terms of how it unfolded.

I never appreciated how critical such a simple step as investing in the right coach would be, in realising possibility.

This is why, in today's podcast, I want to share with you why investing in a coach, quite literally, is the secret to amplifying your productivity and your ability to flourish.

When it's time to get out of your own way

When it's time to get out of your own way

Using science to elevate confidence. Back early on in my career at the ripe old age of 20, I got my first job in a corporate environment working for a woman who I looked up to as a role model. She seemed kind and helpful through the interview process, but not long after I started, I felt like every task I undertook was under a criticism microscope. The longer this went on, the more I tried harder to please her, the less happy she became and the more my confidence eroded.

I was astounded at how my environment had a significant downward shift in a skill that was part of who I am.

I soon realised how toxic this situation had become and came to the conclusion that the only thing standing between me and my ability to believe in myself again and find that spark in my work, was ME.

It was time to get out of my own way.

This is where we are going in this week's podcast because I have been blown away by the number of highly successful professional women I have interviewed over the past few weeks who have shared with me that the biggest barrier to them leading a flourishing life is themselves.

Take a listen and learn a beautiful little hack to help you dial down the inner chatter and step into your spark.
