    Dads In Lockdown - Paul McIntosh - using ACT psychology to negotiate with kids

    Derek had a great chat with Paul on his approach and techniques when dealing with his kids. Paul runs Derek through one example of how the family came to a rational agreement on the best way to handle the screen time issue using an ACT matrix. Armed with a piece of paper, a pen and some post-it notes, Paul managed to come to a calm agreement on sensible screen use. Next episode Paul will be running Derek and his 12 YO son through a similar position, but not something as serious and volatile as screen time. They will probably tackle Derek's desire to teach Tom the skills of his trade and use resources at hand to give him a great head start in the modern world of streaming and content creation.     We had a great chat with Adam White from a Sydney Quarantine Hotel Room. Adam knew what was coming when he applied for special permission to visit his gravely ill mother in the UK. what he did not know was that Victoria would have an outbreak, leaving him locked in a hotel room in Sydney while his family were locked down in a Melbourne suburb. Adam shared what the quarantine process is like, dealing with the loss of his mum in the UK, and what the future looks like for his kids.     Daniel has written several books on raising children, he runs programs in schools and for other professionals, concerned mainly with improving the way we all use technology to support education and learning. He talks with us mainly about the experience of losing a child- grief as well as growth.    Topics covered:   A brief History of Dan's relationship with Dan. The death of a child: our greatest fear. A culture that doesn't deal with death. Kids can cope with reality better than we can. Tragedy brings us into the moment- thinking with your body not your head. Remembrance. Remember what is really important- holding onto the perspective that comes from loss and grief. Parenthood increases the spectrum range of emotions. It's okay to keep the dead alive inside the family narrative and mythology. When do you tell people about the death of a child- it can be hard for people to know what to do. Learning from the dying. Trauma and grief are different, though they often occur together. The digital legacy we leave. Year nine. Whooah! Giving friends at school the space to deal with the death of a friend.     Warwick is a Cinematographer who has filmed, amongst other things, many of Missy Higgins film clips. His erratic and demanding work life has made it hard for him to see his boys as much as he wanted to while they were growing up. We discuss how he managed to have a successful relationship with them.   Topics: Grown up kids. Working in the film industry makes family life almost impossible. Guilt- Missing so much of early life with the kids because of work. There is no such thing as no on a film set. Anecdotes from the set.
