    When former teacher and 2020 QLD Australian of the Year Rachel Downie lost a year 9 student to suicide, she decided to find a way to support young people to speak up when things aren't right. She discovered students often felt too frightened to come forward with possible life-saving information because of peer expectations. This led Rachel to develop and self-fund Stymie – an old-fashioned word for stop – to allow students to anonymously report harm without fear.

    Stephen Pham is creative producer and an original member of Sweatshop – an organisation founded in 2014 in partnership with Western Sydney University. Sweatshop works to empower culturally and linguistically diverse communities through literacy. Growing up as a Vietnamese-Australian in Cabramatta, Stephen realised upon starting university in Sydney’s east that for the first time in his life he was an ethnic minority. He had to learn how to explain himself to people, and share his story over and over again. This is how Stephen discovered the importance of storytelling – because no matter our background, we all have a story to share, and our own unique way of telling it. Now, he helps others to share their stories.

Despite her busy schedule though, Cayla is making time to ensure that young basketballers - especially girls - are encouraged to take up sport and dream big.
