I was born in Austin, Texas. I was raised in a Christian home with both parents and 1 older brother. My dad is a pastor who always stressed the importance of having a relationship with God, loving your family, and getting an education. It appeared at times these were the basic foundations that shaped our future goals in life. My dad holds a Doctorate in Theology and has always strived to make a difference in the lives of others starting with my brother and me. We were always his pupils. My mother started her career at a law enforcement agency and at some point was put in charge of purchasing uniforms for the officers. So I spent a great deal of time after school in the supply store. I believe that is where I first took an interest in being a police officer, a typical little boy growing up with aspirations of being a police officer.

When I was in middle school my parents moved to Leander. My love for sports ultimately afforded me the opportunity through scholarships to play football on a collegiate level. While away in college, my cousin had gotten in trouble with the law and I saw how it impacted my family. Later, my big brother had gotten into some trouble with the law and was unable to spend time with family during holidays and family gatherings. I felt the impact that had on me and my parents.

After graduating from college, I sought out law enforcement. I met with a cousin who talked to me about becoming a police officer. He talked about the brotherhood, comradery, as well as benefits. So I joined the San Antonio Police Department. Being a police officer takes hard work and commitment. It requires long hours of training; it takes a genuine care for the human race. You must have a heart for the people because people will show you the best of who they are and they will show you the worst of who they are. This career provides you the opportunity to make the world a better place, street by street, block by block. It provides great benefits to take care of yourself and your family. I am proud to wear this uniform. I am proud to stand up and be counted among the men and women that make a difference in the lives of the citizens of San Antonio. I also have a responsibility to my family with the common goal to return home every night.

I reconnected with a college teammate who later became one of my best friends. He started a nonprofit organization called “God Behind Bars”. “God Behind Bars” mission is to bridge a gap between God and inmates outside the church walls. God Behind Bars works with a couple of local churches and provides an opportunity for a relationship that would not exist otherwise. I have been privileged to walk along side of this organization and I have seen many lives changed because of it.

Reverend Al Sharpton Talks New Book: 'Rise Up'

Reverend Al Sharpton Talks New Book: 'Rise Up'

ABOUT THE REVEREND AL SHARPTON AND RISE UP

No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, the coming 2020 Presidential Election stands to be one of the most consequential in our nation's history. With the leading political parties diametrically opposed on the path forward and seemingly unwilling to compromise, November is a clear critical juncture for the future of America. IN what will be his seminal call to action, RISE UP: Confronting a Country at the Crossroads (Hanover Square Press; 9/29/20), the Reverend Al Sharpton draws on his decades of unique experience as a civil rights leader, a politician, and a television and radio host to encourage voters to stand up for what they believe and enact change in their country.

Our nation today stands at a crossroads, a historical turning point that both tests our moral character and endangers all that we have fought to gain. If we are to preserve our sense of morality and build a clear and just path forward, we must not only take a hard look at our collective failures and shortcomings but also reclaim our core values. In RISE UP, Rev. Sharpton revisits the highlights of the Obama administration, the 2016 election, Trump's subsequent hold on the GOP and his interactions and relationships with other key players in politics and activism. He also amplifies the new voices and movements that have emerged in response to the Trump presidency, closing with an epilogue of the eulogy he delivered at Georgy Floyd's funeral.

    Rev Sharpton addresses:

. The devastating effects of COVID-19, and how it has illuminated the stark inequities of our country - from racial disparities in wealth and health to a lack in federal leadership.

. The "Latte Liberals" who seek to protect the status quo - and their own privilege - at the expense of actionable change.

. The nascent and necessary rise of women in politics, the effects of toxic masculinity on the African American community and the power of the #MeToo movement.

. The importance of LGBTQ+ rights and equality throughout the nation, intersectionalism, and the positive effect of acceptance within the black church community.

. Immigration control and the moral responsibility Americans have to offer a safe harbor to those fleeing oppression.

. Climate change, and the effects of pollution on predominantly black communities.

' . How to be an activist, using the media and controversy to be heard.

Rev. Sharpton's enduring ability and willingness to take on the political power structure makes him the preeminent voice for the modern era, a time unprecedented in its challenges. A profound examination of the American soul and a clarion call to action, RISE UP offers timeless lessons for anyone who's stood at the crossroads of their personal or political life, weighing their choice of how to proceed.

    ABOUT THE REVEREND AL SHARPTON

Rev. Al Sharpton is the host of MSNBC's "PoliticsNation" and the founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), one of the leading civil rights organization in the world. With over 40 years of experience as a community leader, politician, minister and advocate, the Rev. Al Sharpton is one of America's most-renowned civil rights leaders. Sharpton also hosts the nationally syndicated radio show, "Keepin' It Real", which broadcasts in 40 markets, five days a week. He resides in New York.

Thane Marcus - Catalysts For Hope: Unlocking Engergy, Optimism, And Your Full Potential

    About Thane Marcus

The past four years have been a deep dive into personal development. Although the object of that development was the arena of professional golf, the subject of that development was yours truly. During my golf career, I left no stone unturned in regards to maximizing my human potential. This ceaseless striving has given me a strong grasp of the process involved in producing my best work, whether that be within an office, sweating in the gym, or for the business I’m creating.

The main service that I am providing is what I call Collaboration — Development and Performance Coaching (a combination of Coaching, Consulting, and Creating).

Along with these services, I am committed to providing consistent and thought-provoking content through written blog-posts each month, and through the content I produce on The Up & Comers Show. This is as much selfish as it is selfless - since writing is an exercise which gives me more life than I can share with others in return. From the podcast I host, to the events I speak at, to the blogs I write, and the books I author, I am blessed to be able to learn through many different forms of communication that each facilitate different neurological connections. My goal is for this content to stimulate greater thought, contemplation, and growth in the lives of all who read or listen.
