Racing the Elements with Lara Gruden (S13E28)

This week on the show Alyssa and Haley interview professional triathlete and fitness trainer Lara Gruden. Lara recently made the jump from ITU short-course racing to the 70.3 distance and did her first two long-course races on back-to-back weekends!

She tells us what went into her decision to race this new distance and how the weather extremes in Idaho and Cozumel made for very different race conditions over the two weekends. Racing at this new distance presented Lara with some new challenges. We hear what she learned from her race experiences, and also what her experiences in ITU taught her that she was able to bring into long-course racing.

Alyssa is back on the orienteering race circuit this week, and Haley tells us about her experience dropping off her mail-in ballot!

Take the Leap with Erika Ackerlund (S13E27)

Take the Leap with Erika Ackerlund (S13E27)

Our show this week is dedicated to the life of Maria Thrash, swim coach, training partner, friend, and pillar of the Dynamo Swim Club community. Maria will be missed tremendously by everyone who was lucky enough to have known her.

In our interview this week Haley and Alyssa chat with ITU pro Erika Ackerlund. Erika recently travelled to Europe to race in the shortened WTS race season that kicked off in Hamburg, Germany. In just her second WTS race ever, Erika had a breakout 14th place finish amongst a stacked field of female professionals. She tells us about the training that she has put in to prepare her for this short, but intense season of racing, that brought her three top 15 finishes.

Erika discovered triathlon while attending college in Montana. She tells us about her collegiate triathlon experience, racing as part of her school’s small club, and winning the Collegiate National Championships. After college, Erika jumped straight into professional racing. She tells us about what went into making that decision and how she is living the #feistylife to support her career.

Alyssa and Haley share some of their favourite Maria stories, and Alyssa gives us an update on her Zwift racing experience.

Fail More, Quit Less (Train Your Mind Mini Series Episode 2)

Fail More, Quit Less (Train Your Mind Mini Series Episode 2)

In episode two of our Train Your Mind mini series Vanessa is encouraging us to fail more, but quit less. She explains that the way that we build mental endurance, much like physical endurance, is to endure. But often there is one thing that gets in the way, and that is fear.

Vanessa teaches us what the Motivational Triad is, and why it is important to our mental endurance, and also the difference between failing and quitting. We know that quitting can slow us down, but sometimes failing can be the key to our success. Vanessa helps us learn what is beneath both failing and quitting, and how we can manage both to increase our performance.

Great Big Adventure with Rea Kolbl (S13E26)

Great Big Adventure with Rea Kolbl (S13E26)

This week Alyssa and Haley speak with professional obstacle course and adventure racer Rea Kolbl. She is a self-proclaimed “mountain adventure addict,” and her long list of accomplishments includes the 2017 & 2018 World’s Toughest Mudder Champion, overall winner of the 2020 Grand Traverse, and a second place finish with her team at the Eco Challenge Fiji.

After retiring from gymnastics at the age of 17, Rea moved from her home in Slovenia to California to study at UC Berkeley and was quickly introduced to the world of trail running. From there, she discovered obstacle course racing and found that her background as a gymnast and trail runner made her a perfect fit for the sport.

Rea shares how she has seen the sport evolve over her career, and she breaks down all of the different kinds of obstacle course racing. She also gives us an inside look of what made her team successful at Eco Challenge Fiji, and their plans for redemption in 2021.

Alyssa tells us about her experience this week as a poll observer, and we are sending out a great big THANK YOU to our listeners for 500k listens.
