KDMEO Episode 204 - Doctor Slump (닥터 슬럼프) 9-12

KDMEO Episode 204 - Doctor Slump (닥터 슬럼프) 9-12

IT'S ALLERGY SEASON. WE'RE SORRY. Judy and Linda are back to talk about episodes 9-12 of "Doctor Slump" (닥터 슬럼프), the Netflix drama, starring Park HyungSik and Park ShinHye.

    Digressions:

1:17 - New Patreon donors and Listener E-mails!
25:40 - Judy is on a weird true crime kick lately, and she watched "What Jennifer Did" on Netflix. It's a documentary about a terrible crime in the suburbs of Toronto.
29:29 - Linda threw off Judy's calculations by taking the MBTI test again. She has abandoned the INFJ collective!
33:36 - Judy watched "Believer" (독전), starring Cho JinWoong, Ryu JunYeol and Cha SeungWon. It's no "The Usual Suspects", but Cho JinWoong was onscreen 95% of the time, so it was still a great time.
37:10 - Linda has been watching "Queen of Tears" (눈물의 여왕) like everyone else in Korea. It stars Kim JiWon and Kim SooHyun.
39:36 - Judy and Robert have been watching the second season of "Physical: 100", as motivation to get healthier in our advanced age.
42:18 - As a history buff, Linda watched "Masters of the Air" on Apple TV+. She enjoyed it, but it didn't have the level of character development that "Band of Brothers" did.
44:47 - ***SPOILER ALERT*** Judy dragged Robert to watch "Exhuma" (파묘), starring Kim GoEun, Lee DoHyun, Choi MinSik and Yoo HaeJin. We keep calling Kim GoEun by the wrong name. Sorry about that.

Brownie Mummy ,

Thank you for this!

I feel so happy listening to your podcast. I love the feels for KDrama, the worthy criticisms, the recommendations are just what I wanted in Ep 50. And, your humour is most welcome!

Rad_ika ,

Finally! A Kdrama podcast I actually enjoy.

The earlier episodes are hosted by Judy and Linda. Then Linda had to go teach in South Korea, so Judy and Teresa hosted together for a bit. In the newer-ish episodes, all three host it together. Linda and Judy are of Korean heritage so they provide interesting insights on cultural differences and interesting translation between the dialogue and subtitles. Teresa doesn’t actually talk much but when she does she often makes me laugh. Judy is the most hilariously snippety and she does this drawn out laugh that can be infectious. I find Linda to be the most thoughtful when breaking down character(s) motivation and interactions – I think of her as the voice of reason in the podcast.

They usually do 2-3 episodes of a series per podcast episode. Most scenes are talked about, blatant plot-holes are pointed out, cultural nuances covered (e.g. differences between Korean vs Western culture), and what I like most of all is they don’t treat their listeners like idiots. They use Korean words and explain it the listeners – I think I can speak for most kdrama fans that if you watch just enough you pick up so many Korean words and phrases. A lot of times there is a literal meaning to it in English, most other times there are notions that needs explaining. I think being bilingual this appeals to me because my two languages are very different, and I understand a lot of words can’t be literally translated and have the same meaning due to cultural nuances.

It is so nice to know some people just not simply make kdrama podcast, but actually pay attention to audio quality. There are some episodes here and there that has technical issue or, due to Covid and social distancing, sounds like it’s over the phone but I think it’s still leaps and bounds better than a lot of the homemade kdrama podcasts available. In the older episodes Judy used a banshee/eagle/screeching sound for expletives sensor – that was a bit grating when I was using in-ear headphones but she has changed it since.

I think those who like ‘polished’ and ‘well-prepared’ podcasts may find this too casual. But I appreciate that listening to them makes me feel like I’m just listening to friends talk casually over drinks or coffee about kdrama. Judy (tries to…?) prepare notes and she often can’t read her own writing - I find this relatable to some of my friends.
