I’m attracted to true crime that is interested in the “why?”: Ruth McIver

Melbourne-based Ruth McIver’s debut book I Shot the Devil l fictionalises the satanic panic of the 1980s and 1990s in North America where society became somewhat obsessed with the souls of teens and whether heavy metal was corrupting them.

Ruth won the prestigious Richell Prize for emerging writers in 2018 for this novel.

    BOOK SYNOPSIS
Erin Sloane was sixteen when high school senior Andre Villiers was murdered by his friends. They were her friends, too, led by the intense, charismatic Ricky Hell. Five people went into West Cypress Road Woods the night Andre was murdered. Only three came out.
Ativan, alcohol and distance had dimmed Erin's memories of that time. But nearly twenty years later, an ageing father will bring her home. Now a journalist, she is asked to write a story about the Southport Three and the thrill-kill murder that mesmerised the country. Erin's investigation propels her closer and closer to a terrifying truth. And closer and closer to danger.

    Ruth’s essential true crime reads:
The Stranger Beside Me by Ann Rule (about Ted Bundy)
The Lost Girls by Ava Benny-Morrison (murder of Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her daughter Khandalyce)
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara (Ther Golden State Killer)
The shrine of Jeffrey Dahmer by Brian Masters

The intuition of a detective’s best friend: Simon Rowell

The intuition of a detective’s best friend: Simon Rowell

I was sold on reading Simon Rowell’s The Long Game when I spotted the gorgeous Golden Retriever on the cover. The dog, called Harry, is the service dog for lead character Detective Sergeant Zoe Mayer. And Harry’s instincts prove to be a great help to Zoe as she investigates a murder on Victoria’s picturesque Mornington Peninsula.

I spoke to Simon a little while before the book’s release – it’s now available and I highly recommend it, especially if you love dogs and a thrilling mystery read.

My characters are inspired by working in drug rehab : Kyle Perry

My characters are inspired by working in drug rehab : Kyle Perry

Kyle Perry’s debut The Bluffs is about a group of teen girls who go missing in the Tasmanian bushland with a cast of characters who are as wild as the landscape.

His latest book The Deep centres around a family living on the rugged coastline of Tasmania, who have run a drug ring for generations using the fishing industry to ply their illegal activities.

Born and bred in Tasmania, the island state that’s at the bottom of Australia, Kyle is also a counselor and has worked in drug and alcohol rehabs, case management and with young people.

He knows the hecticness and bleakness of drug addiction and societal issues and pressures from his years in this field.

It's these experiences and stories that have inspired his characters and thrilling plots.

Growing up under a pervading threat changes you : Nicola West

Growing up under a pervading threat changes you : Nicola West

It’s almost inevitable that debut author Nicola West would end up writing crime. She’s the daughter of a police officer and when she was in Year 12 she wrote a letter to serial killer Ivan Milat as part of a school project. But more than that, Nicola is as tenacious as any main character you’ll find in crime fiction.

Nicola lives with chronic health conditions and she knows what it’s like to fight for to get answers, just like her main character Lo in her debut novel Catch us the Foxes, set in a small town with a lot of secrets.

I learnt from the world's best Criminal Psychologist : Michael Robotham

I learnt from the world's best Criminal Psychologist : Michael Robotham

Australian author Michael Robotham is a superstar of the crime fiction world with his many books selling millions of copies.

His book the Secrets She Keeps was made into an Australian television series and it attracted ratings through the roof when it screened on the BBC in the UK.

And his clinical psychologist character Joe O'Loughlin, who appears in 9 books is coming to the screen, with filming currently underway in London and a big name in the main role.

Before Michael turned to writing crime fiction he was a journalist and ghostwriter in the UK. One of the books he ghostwrote was The Jigsaw Man, the autobiography of Paul Britton, a leading British forensic psychologist who also inspired the character Fitz played by Robbie Coltrane in the incredible 1990s television drama Cracker.

Michael’s latest book is When You Are Mine and at the time of this interview, he’d just won the Ian Fleming Silver Dagger Award from the UK’s Crime Writers’ Association.
