024: Let's Bee Engaged - Julian from Tasmanian Honey Company

In observance of the recent celebration of World Bee Day under the theme "Bee engaged - Build Back Better for Bees," today's episode is very buzzworthy.

Today we delve into a vast topic relevant to us here at Sustomi, and that is bees. Without bees, we wouldn't have the beeswax to make our beeswax wraps, and we wouldn't have the fantastic products that help keep all your food fresh.

So in this episode, I brought in Julian from the Tasmanian Honey Company. He has had a long career in beekeeping and a long family history, so he's very knowledgeable about the world of bees. And we dug deep into the topics around bees, how beehives work, the impact of having them in the environment, if any, how to keep them healthy, particularly some of the threats that are currently around the bees, and how human actions have impacted the landscape.

In This Episode, We Talk About:

How do beehives function to produce honeyHow do you keep protein levels in hivesWhat's the best-balanced diet for beesHow to ensure that the honey you're getting is Manuka honeyThe ecological impacts of moving the hivesThe explanation behind bees as SuperorganismsWhat royal jelly isWhy do you need to breed Queen BeesThe potential threats to bee colonies across the worldSome of the viruses or diseases that kill the hivesThings people can do at home to help the beesThe impacts of plastics on bees

023: Making Hemp Mainstream - Alex Keach from ECS Botanics

ECS Botanics' mission is to make hemp mainstream. Today's guest is Alex Keach, the founder of ECS Botanics. His passion for agriculture in the wellness industry has sparked the development of a hemp farm, medicinal cannabis, and hemp food company.
I want to educate people in this episode on how great hemp is aside from the medicinal benefits. Today, Alex talks about hemp as a fiber, a building material associated with food, and shares why we need to support the hemp industry. It wouldn't be a life freshly sorted episode if we didn't talk a little about food and ecological sustainability, too.

In This Episode We Talk About:

    019: Waste-Free Family - The Carters

    019: Waste-Free Family - The Carters

They live on a suburban block and are able to produce almost no waste, with a family of 5! Lifestyle is more than just the waste side of things.

For this episode, I didn't want to list off the things they do to reduce their plastic usage - we hear a fair bit already on that - in this episode, we talk about what their goal of low-waste life is, how the lifestyle fits into the bigger picture and affects the greater economy. They are a very intelligent couple and although their waste-free lifestyle may seem quite extreme to some, you might be surprised they are not too far from the norm. There are always elements to take and implement elsewhere from a conversation like this one.

There's a lot of juicy tips - things like a waste-free DIY dog food recipe and how principles of unschooling can be applied to your adult life - and potentially make it better! You can check out spiral garden online and their book a family guide to waste-free living... Anyway, here are The Carters!

In This Episode We Talk About:

About recycling-freeWhat happens during the recycling processHow do they see a low-waste life, transforming the economy and how is it the same with creating a most sustainable environmentA day in a life with the Carters looks like and how they go about their life How to make DIY pet foodWhat unschooling is
