Philosophers have debated that men are from Mars and women are from Venus... these ideas often support the divide amongst sexes and leave women, specifically black women exposed, targeted, unprotected, and undervalued, and underserved. A lot of men grow up with unhealthy and inaccurate ideas of manhood, mental health, emotional expression, and intelligence. Some men carry a lot of unaddressed traumas and face ridicule for associated responses to said traumas. How do we normalize the open expression of pain experienced by Black men? As men, we are often expected to be the "provider" within the context of a family. Particularly, within the Black community, many men we know have expressed feeling immense pressure to perform/produce financially. The crazy part is that most of us did not receive a manual on how to do so but we are expected to figure it out because (that is what men are supposed to do). Some will say, "your dad is the manual."
