There is an abundance of information on creating a great life for those in their 20s, 30s, and even 40s, but truly little for those 50 and beyond. The media seems to think we should either be chasing our past glory days by clinging to youth with a white knuckle death grip OR just quietly fading into the background and letting life pass by. Yet, this time of life brings an amazing opportunity to combine our wisdom and experience with our passion and enthusiasm and refine, redefine, and reinvent who we want to be and how we want to live. Let’s get started!

    Normalizing Emotion (with Joe Gerstandt)

    Normalizing Emotion (with Joe Gerstandt)

    Joe Gerstandt, Inclusion Strategist, discusses the challenges many middle age people face around loneliness, isolation, a lack of connection, and feeling alone in problems. At a time of life that has many unexpected changes to our lives and even our identities and how we define ourselves, many of us find ourselves ill equipped to discuss or process the range of emotions affecting our lives and wellbeing. Neither Joe nor I are mental health professionals, and this discussion is based simply on observation and life experiences – both our own and those around us. This is not a conversation full of answers (although Joe has some pretty good thoughts), rather it’s meant to be the start of a much broader discussion around connection and the importance of normalizing emotion.

    Jay Kuhns is not a self-help guru. He doesn’t get paid to show you how to be your best self. BUT, he has worked really hard at being intentional about being his best self and he shares what has worked for him, including:

    * Taking the long view to life

    * His focus on sleep, nutrition, and fitness

    * How he plans on living to 100

    * His two relationship rules with his kids

    * The importance of nurturing multiple communities

    * Creating a personal board of directors

    * Setting goals

    * Cultivating happiness

    * Giving up Little Debbie Swiss Rolls (a guilty treat we both share)

    Midlife Mastery: Let’s Get Started

    Midlife Mastery: Let’s Get Started

    I have some questions about mastering midlife, starting with how do you do it?

    When you’re young you learn from your parents and go to school to learn how to succeed. As you enter the different life stages in your 20s and 30s and even into your 40s there are all sorts of books, magazines, movies, and TV shows about how to do it well. And then…

    I turned 50 this year and as I look around, the media and advertisements seem to think I should either be chasing the past glory days and clinging to my youth with a white knuckle death grip OR just quietly fading into the background.

    No. No. Not a chance.

    I have no desire to be 25 again (and it’s not going to happen even if I wanted it to) and I’m not ready to disappear. I have experience and wisdom I never had in my youth and feel like I’m just now starting to enter my prime.

    The working title of this podcast was Louder Than Old Age. Perhaps not a great title, but it sums up my attitude. I want to turn my life up to 11 and finish it even better than I started. But to do that, I need to find out how. I’ll be talking with those who are bringing their passion, enthusiasm, and ambition into this next stage of life. People who will inspire and share ideas for mastering midlife and creating an amazing second half.
