EP234: Raising Children to Become Critical Thinkers with Julie Bogart

Education is not solely about acquiring information and skills across subject areas, but also about understanding how and why we believe what we do. At a time where our online capabilities allow us infinite information and opinions, you can understand how parents (and teachers) worry about how students will interpret what they read and see. But how do we encourage them to examine different perspectives? How do we teach them the skills they need to become discerning adults? Joining me today is author, Julie Bogart who draws from more than 20 years of homeschooling experience and creating curricula. In this conversation, Julie offers insight and practical tips to help children at every stage of development to grow in their ability to explore the world around them.

[REPLAY] EP191: Reassessing Your School Year Routines

[REPLAY] EP191: Reassessing Your School Year Routines

Order (or Review) Your Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living & Parenting with Simplicity
There are two times each year that always encourage me to re-evaluate my routine. The first is at the beginning of a new year and the second is the beginning of a new school year. The back-to-school season (or any change in seasons, for that matter) is a great time to re-evaluate our daily and weekly routines to make sure they’re serving us. Most of our children are back in school (and likely have been for several weeks), so now is the perfect time to reassess what is working and what isn't. Joining me for the conversation today is the queen of routines, Ashley Brown (of Routine & Things). She and I talk through tips that have benefited our personal schedules and other strategies that might be of benefit to you!

EP233: Free-Range Children (The Benefits of Children Outside Without You!) with Allana Robinson

EP233: Free-Range Children (The Benefits of Children Outside Without You!) with Allana Robinson

We’ve heard all about the need to get our 1000 Hours Outside (thanks to friend of the podcast, Ginny Yurich) but what about getting our kids outdoors WITHOUT us? Joining me today is parenting coach, Allana Robinson. Allana believes a helpful developmental tool can be the role of outdoor play (and why it needs to be done (from time-to-time) without parents!) Her coaching encourages parents to ditch the overwhelm (and confusion) so they can actually focus on things that matter (which is right up my alley!)

Bonus Episode: How Parents Can Lay the Foundation for Literacy Success with Maya Smart

Bonus Episode: How Parents Can Lay the Foundation for Literacy Success with Maya Smart

Did you know that babies less than a day old can parse out different vowel sounds? Or that language learning starts early while a baby is in utero, by about 35 weeks’ gestation, and the formation of synapses involved in language learning peaks during the first 6 months after birth? Me neither, until I read Maya Smart’s READING FOR OUR LIVES: A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six, a step-by-step guide for building literacy in a child’s early years. Maya is here today to discuss key strategies that parents should employ early (and often), conventional reading tools and instruction focuses on teachers and the school years, essential lessons parents can – and should – give their children, and more…
For those that are new around here, I release bonus episodes with unique topics that may not interest my wider audience so if this topic doesn’t fit what you’re looking for, join me back here next Tuesday for a conversation about the importance of outdoor play (sans parents!) that you don’t want to miss!

Inspiring

Have binge listened since I found your podcast. Inspiring topics which go well beyond physical minimalism. Thanks for your content.

Helps me calm down and improve my mental well-being

Thank you Diane and invited experts for your effort and generosity in creating this wonderful podcast channel. I started listening to your podcast while driving my son to and from school in the past month, and it’s given me a lot to reflect on. Reminds me self care is most important because if we are not well ourselves, how will we care for our children, our family. It’s been a stressful year for me and finding your podcasts really came at the right time. I really needed this and still need this. Thank you for the tips, especially deciding on what are your “non negotiables”, and making “should to good”. Sending thanks all the way from Singapore!
