TMM 124 Why budgets don’t work with Melissa Browne

TMM 124 Why budgets don’t work with Melissa Browne

Why budgets don’t work with Melissa Browne

In this episode I get the pleasure of interviewing one of my dear friends and guru of ‘all things finance’, Melissa Browne – to talk about her new book ‘Budgets Don’t Work, But This One Does’.

If your current budgets or thinking hasn’t been working, this gives you a whole new opportunity to rewrite the script, to roll your sleeves up, to get excited about money.

“Until we make the unconscious conscious, it will direct our life and we’ll call it fate.” Carl Jung

Melissa is an author and serial entrepreneur. She is CEO of an award-winning accounting and advisory firm, CEO of a financial planning business and Director of Business at a long-day preschool – three very different businesses, that all are pushing the boundaries in their fields, questioning what is possible and disrupting their industry, in order to create the best possible results for their communities.

It’s been a lifetime of work, running a accounting firm, mentoring, coaching writing for the Fin review and other Australian institutions, as well as renowned global news platforms around finance, forecasting, shares and everything to do with building wealth, however Melissa wouldn’t have it any other way – she just loves teaching others ‘how to do it!’.

Melissa says ‘there could be 50 different paths to get you to the life that you want to design, but there is also a whole stack of limiting beliefs and inherent ways that you should be operating’. So you know she is very much in alignment with my philosophy that we need to be the CEO of our life as well as our business and take responsibility.

In this episode we talk about:

    * discovering financial awareness* why you need financial knowledge and sticking your head in the sand or an online shopping site won’t work* how to recognise limiting patters and build good financial habits.

Step One – Budgets Don’t Work unless you Know Your ‘Money Story’

The importance of discerning between a ‘pattern’ and ‘right’ decision.

When most people think about budgets, or about designing the life they want, or setting financial goals, they often inherit values based on their parents, peers, or social beliefs.

When you dig deep there are certain myths of what success looks like and how we truly recognise what great finance is.

Melissa says ‘I believe that comes from the nurture part of who we are. It starts with our money stories. Often we don’t think to dig out those money stories that we grew up with, or that we’ve inherited from our parents’.

‘We don’t understand why we’re accumulating and behaving the way that we do. Maybe we grew up with the money story that, for women it might be smart goals, a particular profession and so on, for blokes that might be around status and power and the things you need to have in your life to prove that you have made it to the top’.

This is the first part of recognising that ‘money story’.

A good start is to write down those old stories and ask yourself, what are my beliefs around money?

Without realising it so many people are quoting a shame story.

They’re quoting a story that they just did not expect to be in, especially now with COVID-19 the need to really understand, plan and budget is greater than ever.

It’s being brave enough to own it and to rewrite...

TMM123 The Truth Series Part 2 – communicate without conflict

TMM123 The Truth Series Part 2 – communicate without conflict

Episode 123 The Truth Series Part 2 – How to share and communicate without conflict

Today’s Blog & Video is part 2 in the TRUTH Series

Learning how to share yours with grace and integrity and holding the space for yourself and others.

Often we feel that to be assertive is to be aggressive – however it is not that at all.

The hardest element is really anchoring in your truth and backing yourself when we have spent most of our lives unwittingly waiting for the approval or acknowledgement of others.

This powerful series will guide you through understanding that it is vital to connect with what you feel and need and have those elements as a priority and that by doing so you hold space to empower others to show up in truth as well. To do this you must surrender control over what that may bring, convincing others or trying to manage a situation, person, place or project.

Truth brings liberation if handled correctly and congruently. You may not get the delivery of it right the first, second or third time but it will flow and you will find your grounding and the freedom it brings will be game changing.

Find the light for yourself and it will shine for others regardless.

Here in this podcast and video are 3 simple steps to begin sharing the who, what and why things really matter without conflict.

SHARING YOURS WITH GRACE & COMMUNICATING WITHOUT CONFLICT

Today’s blog and video is part 2 in the TRUTH Series from my Monday Mojo’s – Learning how to share yours with grace and integrity and holding the space for yourself and others.

Grab a quiet spot or a moment and come on this journey with me – it’s worth it.

As I was writing this Mojo, I had to reflect on the many conversations with clients lately around the undoing of programming around truth in communication and that coming into that place took a great deal of courage.

Often we feel that to be assertive is to be aggressive – however it is not that at all.

In actual fact I have some wonderful friendships where the truth is the very best approach. It creates such a sense of respect and demonstrates way more care than avoiding it.

Truth is not aggressive or pushy. It just is. It does not claim or manipulate. It holds its own energy.

The point is we were never taught to really stay in this space of truth. From a young age mostly were were taught to be ‘good’. To blend in, fit in, people please and comply to some degree or another. We were taught that with truth comes conflict.

Even if you thought you were a rebel chances are you were sticking to a stereotype of that as well. All so exhausting trying to retain the mask….

This powerful series will guide you through understanding that it is vital to connect with what you feel and need and have those elements as a priority. That by doing so, you hold space to empower others to show up in truth as well.

    * To do this you must surrender control over what that may bring, surrender the habit of convincing others or trying to manage a situation, person, place or project.

Truth brings liberation if handled correctly and congruently.

    * The hardest element is really anchoring in your truth first of all and then backing yourself. Especially when we have spent most of our lives unwittingly waiting for the approval or acknowledgement of others.

TMM122 The Truth Series Part 1 – How To Discover Yours

TMM122 The Truth Series Part 1 – How To Discover Yours

TMM122 The Truth Series – Part 1 – How To Discover Yours

In this months series of 3, I talk about the power of truth without confrontation but from a place of clarity and calm.

Why it is game changing when we can learn to discover what our core values and truths are and then feel safe and empowered to stand by those with a sense of peace knowing it’s not about convincing or ‘selling’ and idea to anyone – but those who naturally want to see you shine and be authentic will want you to be your genuine self.

How being in your truth empowers others to be in theirs Why being in truth is better than people pleasing and being “good” Because doing things to be accepted erodes at your self worth and is not a place of love but not not feeling enough.

The 3 pillars to work out what really matters to you and how to sit with that before you worry about having to share it with the “world” and your ecosystem.

    Defining Your Truth

Leadership for the world we are in now means there is no hiding. No masks. No excuses on other people or patterns.

It will demand the best of you more than ever before and in doing so reward you so completely you will wonder why you didn’t fully embrace this change and growth earlier.

You’ll be reading this because you are a pioneer in some way or another so you’re here for a reason. So let me just reiterate the drivers seat position. Change is not a choice – it’s a chance to really evolve. Lean in. The more you resist it the greater the energy you will loose, the more unrest you will feel and the less your life will flow.

In this series of 3, I talk about the power of truth without confrontation, but from a place of clarity and calm.

Why it is game changing when:

    a) we can learn to discover what our core values and truths are

    b) then feel safe and empowered to stand by those with a sense of peace knowing it’s not about convincing or ‘selling’ and idea to anyone

    c) and those who naturally want to see you shine and be authentic, will want you to be your genuine self

+ How being in your truth empowers others to be in theirs

+ Why being in truth is better than people pleasing and being “good”

+ Because doing things to be accepted erodes at your self worth and is not a place of love but not not feeling enough.

Phew! That was a bunch of truth bombs just there.

There is No New Normal – We are Defining Our Own First

Please remember the new world landscape requires us to be conscious of our own actions and decision making frameworks – it is challenging the status quo and former belief systems that built the very foundations which are being torn down one after another at the moment.

From old family patterns, corporations exposed, leaders spotlighted and our systems and policies being turned upside down.

There is no New Normal as yet. Before we even worry about that we are being urged to take stock, deconstruct old patterns and beliefs and write a new script as leaders for our own lives.

From truth comes freedom, it takes less energy, is more congruent and provides those around you with choice.

From truth comes a sense of peace and acceptance &#82...

    TMM121 Conscious Communication

    TMM121 Conscious Communication

TMM121 Conscious Communication With Pamela Pannifex.

As leaders in life it’s essential to ensure we evolve and recognise patterns and behaviours that may hold us back from harmony. I firmly believe communication is the critical pathway for clarity, calm and connection and that’s why I have asked Pamela Panifex from Sunshine Holistic Counselling to join me on this episode of The Mojo Maker show and podcast..

With a master’s degree in psychotherapy and almost three decades in the field developing her approach, Pamela has created a truly unique practice, specialising in relationships, marriage counselling and individual therapy.

Pamela is a fully qualified naturopath and understands that ‘healthy’ and ‘productive’ relationships, whether it’s personal, or business go hand in hand. Her mission, like mine, is to ensure the ‘right’ knowledge empowers people to thrive and perhaps most importantly, to help them self discover and grow.

We came together to discuss the important aspect of evolving communication, since communication is so often responsible for ‘unhealthy’ relationships that given the right tools, could so easily be navigated away from chaos to calm. .

In this episode we run through

    * how to communicate from a place of peace and harmony* the importance of not shutting communication barriers down* ways to move into a better space for equal alignment* the awareness of your authentic truth and how it is best for all.

    + Practicing those

    + Rookie errors

    – How to recover the speed bumps when you are learning these new skills

    – Common mistakes that disempower by well-meaning partnerships

    – When both of you are learning how to assert your truth

Framed around the 3 Styles of communication:

    * Passive* Aggressive* Assertive

The first two are more commonly used and why we use them, may be greatly influenced by learnt behaviours from our family, how we were disciplined and what was expected of us as a child.

The third style requires self awareness and is perhaps the most difficult to articulate –  as so often being in ‘truth’ can be perceived as selfish or aggressive  – wherein it is absolutely not the case. In fact assertive communication delivered with a grounded approach is the most valuable style of communication for both personal and commercial world.

When we let people know what we believe, where we stand and what is important to us from a place of centred honesty it empowers them to own their own response, contribution and connection to that for a reciprocal partnership or natural and calm recognition of when the alignment is not really there at all.

First up – we are often taught to sell or tell rather than just advise and empower  – when we stand in truth and provide clear frameworks it benefits all parties. The delivery and receipt of that information is where the awareness needs to come into play.

So let’s look at these styles in more detail.

‘Conscious’ Communication Style 1  – Passive – trying to keep the peace

The intention is lovely, it comes from a good place and in a relationship, it’s all about I lose, you win. This approach is commonly taken, because as humans we are not going into relationships, deliberately trying to communicate in counterproductive ways.

    As lovely as it sounds,

TMM120 Leading from Home for Conservation

Welcome back to a little express session on the show with Al Ramadan co-founder of Play Bigger the category design guru and Nik Strong-Cvetich, who’s the executive director of Save The Waves Coalition.

How Do We Lead in Conservation From Home

As directors, how do we take overwhelm of climate change, plastics, oceans, just everything that we’ve been bombarded with at the moment, which are just horrific messaging and going.

i.e is there one thing I can do on a micro level to make a difference.

Al:  For me, at least at a personal level, it was overwhelming what choices and where I could make investments for climate change. It’s something I really care about. I care about what’s going to happen for the kids. What I found with Save The Waves was it connected with my passion. Surfing is a passion of mine.

Ecosystems, the plants, the animals, the waves, the people, they are things that I want to see protected and intact.

That’s how I got involved with Save The Waves and the Benefits of protecting the ecosystem:

    * If we are successful next set some insanely aggressive goals at thousands of ecosystems protected by 2030.* If we do all of that, that is going to have a very positive impact on climate change.

For me it was, get something that you’re passionate about, get on it and go see if you can help that organisation which is just part of the solution to the macro.

Nikki:  It’s already integrated in your daily life. I think that’s the thing. People get overwhelmed by things that they can’t tangibly touch. That tangibility for you of surfing ecosystems and then business provides that trifecta. Also, your wife, she doesn’t surf, but she’s massively into marine conservation. Now suddenly she has a platform too.

Al:  That’s exactly right. Whilst I do surf, she enjoys the surf ecosystem. Don’t just think of it as being someone who’s a surfer. She will be walking along the top of the cliff looking at the ocean, looking at the artists in our part of Santa Cruz, whales.

Surf ecosystems have this wonderful thing. It’s a place where we go hang out and feel good.  So we can give back to the joy we give.

Nikki:  Nik how about your views – kids these days are coming home from school. They’re having stress anxiety and fear, terror from getting bombarded with the world is melting. These kids that are five and six are actually being nightmares about this overwhelmed.

You’ve got two young children. What would you say to parents that have kids trying to navigate through these massive messages at the moment?

Nik S-V: Well, I think about it in terms of leadership. Your job as a parent is to be a leader. Then your job as a leader is problem-solving for it.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a business or a nonprofit. You’re solving a problem. How do you do that as a leader is you take a big, huge problem and then you break it down into small pieces.

Then you take those pieces out and assign them to either partners or people underneath you. We actually did a really bad job sometimes in the ...

TMM119 How To Stop Betraying Your Own Intuition

How To Stop Betraying Your Own Intuition

How to release the feeling of being “betrayed” and realise it isn’t actually from others.

This little video will give you some tips on how to harness that energy, and realise it’s a gift to understand you probably had a little voice telling you all along something was out of alignment.

    1. stop beating yourself up

    2. don’t blame others

    3. switch this around to learn that everything in life is an opportunity for growth and evolution.

    * how to release resentment and take the personal work to understand your inner voice always knows the way. * how to step out of feeling extreme disappointment and learn the art of listening to your own intuition in the first place. * how to recognise self sabotage and start making decisions from a true sense of self.

Those projects and people who are meant to be in your life will be there regardless and they will ride the storms with you – there is always a moment to communicate and provide clarity.
