34: Warts and all: Your Story is Your Superpower (here's why you need to share it...) with Leonie Dawson

34: Warts and all: Your Story is Your Superpower (here's why you need to share it...) with Leonie Dawson

In the online course world, there's lots of "coaches" spruiking lots of promises, but Leonie Dawson is the real deal.  And I know because she's an open book.   Leonie is, by her own admission, a wildly creative introvert who's the former editor of the Australian Government business website, business dot gov.au and now the CEO of her own namesake company, Leonie Dawson, that's signed up 50,000 subscribers to her database and turns over millions of dollars each year.

Leonie's also an international best selling author, multiple-award winning businesswoman and one of the OG bloggers when blogging first came onto the scene in the early 2000's.

Leonie swears often and calls her customers names like blossom and beautiful soul and she talks regularly about taboo subjects like ADHD, autism, money, mental health and mothering...you would think people would run from that 'in your face' honesty and discomfort.

But on the contrary Leonie's attraction is magnetic and her community cannot get enough of her.   I wanted to share Leonie's story because so many women I work with in business are afraid to be authentic, they're afraid to tell their warts and all stories, admit failure or be themselves - because they think that's NOT what their audience or customers want.

Leonie is not for everyone. But she's cool with that. Because the community she attracts are superfans and she's created a $14 million dollar business off their devotion and investment. Oh and she only works 10 hours a week.

In case you're unsure, Affiliate Marketing is a performance marketing channel where brands pay for customer acquisition by partnering with influencers or affiliates who promote their products.Building part of your business or personal brand based on an Affiliate Marketing program is also statistically more likely to get your product or service featured in media in areas like product reviews or recommendations? How? Because Journalists are incentivised to include affiliate links in their stories, as it brings in an extra revenue stream for the business and helps them meet their KPIs.

28: Words of Wisdom: Choose Your Words Wisely and Smash Your Sales with Wordfetti's Anita Siek

28: Words of Wisdom: Choose Your Words Wisely and Smash Your Sales with Wordfetti's Anita Siek

Anita Siek is not a TV producer, print journalist or magazine editor.  But she is in the business of words.  And she's really bloody good at it.

Words that encourage people to take action, to feel something, to do something, words that produce a specific outcome...Do you know how powerful a skill like that is?  To be able to guide someone to take action, to do what you want them to do based purely on the fact that your written copy told them to.  It's crazy!  And we all need this skill in our business, like, yesterday!

Anita Siek is a lawyer turned brand and copy strategist and CEO of Wordfetti, a strategic copywriting and brand strategy house helping brands that don't do normal, stand out and make more sales through psychology, design-thinking and words.

Outside of Wordfetti, Anita is also the co-founder of Lenny, a digital mortgage broking business, the host of Brandfetti - a leading Marketing podcast, a speaker and she runs a high-touch Mastermind to help businesses strategically and sustainably grow and scale through unconventional business strategies.

Some of Anita's clients include Australia's largest insurer group IAG, The Calile Hotel Group, TEDx, Lack of Color and more. Her work has been featured on Forbes, Mumbrella, SmartCompany and Thrive Global.   In short, in the world of words, Anita is a bit of a celebrity and as a former journalist and writer, I'm a word geek and super-fan so this one is a bit of a love fest.     But I promise, even if words aren't your thing or writing clever copy is the thing you loathe most in business, Anita's insight is for every. body. That's the ironic thing right, by the end of this episode her words will have convinced you that the words YOU choose to use in your business are a game changer in every way.  And they are.

27: Don't Sell Your Story, Just Tell Your Story: Why Story Telling Beats Sales Pitches Every Time.

27: Don't Sell Your Story, Just Tell Your Story: Why Story Telling Beats Sales Pitches Every Time.

Journalist and entrepreneur, Annabelle Hickson, is a very talented story teller and knows a bloody good yarn when she hears one.  So good, in fact, she started her own magazine, Galah in 2020 with precisely that mission: to share beautiful story telling about regional headlines that matter.

Formerly a city girl, Annabelle, started her career as a reporter for The Australian newspaper in the early 2000s, before she fell in love with a handsome farmer from the NSW border and her life took a completely different direction.

Annabelle now lives on Australia's second largest pecan orchard, a farm situated in far north west New South Wales sandwiched between the tiny towns of Tenterfield and Texas. Yes that's the Texas NSW. This is also Galah HQ.

As an outsider all she'd ever heard in the media was negativity about the bush, droughts, floods, rains and whingeing farmers. But her experience on the land was proving to be quite different, Everywhere she looked she saw smart, clever and resilient people who talked about opportunities instead of limitations.  Annabelle wanted to tell a different story and she knew most mainstream magazines were already battling diminishing budgets, staff cuts and quality issues.

Annabelle wanted to create a publication that assumed people in regional Australia were a smart and increasingly diverse lot, who cared about community and creativity and the environment, as well as profitability. And she wanted a publication that acted as a bridge between the city and country divide. And so Galah was born.

Annabelle has an incredible way with words, she's a gifted story-teller and can sniff out a paid ad, thinly veiled as a story pitch, from a mile away.

Join me as we talk about the importance of building trust in your brand before all else, how she created a 70,000 plus community from scratch and why great story-telling sells so well.

You can check out her incredible masterpiece that is Galah Magazine right here: https://www.galahpress.com/
