Paleo-Cinema Podcast 261 - It Started In Naples - Payday

This time around it's a December-May romance set on the Isle of Capri and an entitled, insane country and western singer in the 1970s American South. It starts with It Started In Naples starring Clark Gable and Sophia Loren from 1960 then we finish with Payday from 1972 starring Rip Torn and Ahna Capri.

Paleo-Cinema Podcast 260 - Much Ado About Nothing - Don't Bother To Knock

Paleo-Cinema Podcast 260 - Much Ado About Nothing - Don't Bother To Knock

Shakespeare and an obscure, minor film noir. That's what this podcast is about. We start with Kenneth Branagh's joyous version of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, also starring Emma Thompson and Denzel Washington, from 1993 then we go back to 1952 for Don't Bother To Knock starring Richard Widmark and Marilyn Monroe.

Movies and more

I have been listening to this podcast for about 6 months now and have never been disappointed. Terry knows his stuff when it comes to movies, mostly pre-1990 but also the odd current release when they are relevant to the discussion. His style is fairly laid back and just opinionated enough to make things interesting without beating you over the head. Plenty of movie trivia but it all hangs together in a (mostly) coherent narrative. I have watched a lot of great movies I would not have heard of but for this podcast, and re-watched some with a more critical eye. As a fellow Aussie I have no problem with Terry's occasional colourful language which livens things up nicely.

Passionate and knowledgeable

Terry doesn't run Paleo Cinema in a formal way. It's more like you're with a friend having a couple of beers, and he's passionately going into detail about a couple of films he loves and why you should give them the time of day. The informal presentation is what makes this enjoyable. I've heard other podcasts from equally knowledgeable presenters, but they seem to either be too "presenter"-like or ramble on without purpose. Terry will point out the flaws of a film, as well, but he's predominantly there to show you why he loves films - not everything that's wrong with them. He's brought my attention to films I would never have known about. The feedback from like-minded souls (including the entertaining Doctor Zomb) enhances the enjoyment of the show. Essential listening if you really give a damn about film.

Excavating the Best (And Likebly Worst) of Cinema Past

Terry Frost is a wryly curmudgeonly enthusiast for pre-1980 cinema. He'll tell you why they just don't make them like that anymore and along the way he'll uncover an endless procession of gems, from obscure 1960s Eurospy movies to largely forgotten Hollywood musicals and many a well-known classic as well. He'll tell you the background to the movies, not just how they came to be made but how they relate to what was happening in the wider world at the time. From time to time he'll even spice things up with some cool vintage music. All-in-all a man of impeccable taste.
