    49. Doctor Visits in English | Everyday English Conversation

    49. Doctor Visits in English | Everyday English Conversation

Listen to our conversation to learn how to talk about medical problems when you need to have an English conversation with your doctor for the flu, if you are injured or have other common problems.

    ** Transcription: **

Curtis:  Okay. For today’s conversation, we’re going to talk about things related to going to the doctor. So, getting sick or having an injury, right?

Amy:  Yeah, exactly. We have noticed that a lot of our students don’t really know how to explain how they're feeling, maybe pain or different symptoms that they're having in their body. So we thought that we could share some of our experiences that we’ve had, unfortunately, where we’ve either been sick or hurt ourselves and what it was like, what was happening to us. So, Curtis, for you I think we’re gonna start backwards and maybe moving our way forward in time.

    Curtis:  Okay.

Amy:  And one of the first stories that you were gonna talk about was related to something that happened to you in high school, right?

Curtis:  Yeah. It was back in high school. Actually, I was in a marching band and I played the bass drum, and we actually competed against other marching bands. So we went on tour through the United States and we won this competition one night. And then after the competition we went back to the high school gymnasium that we were staying in, and around these high schools are stairways or staircases.

    Amy:  Like the bleachers, right?

    52. Living Abroad in Mexico | English Audio about Immigrating

    52. Living Abroad in Mexico | English Audio about Immigrating

In this English podcast, Amy and Curtis share their experience of what it's like immigrating to and living in another country. You can listen to the podcast, moving to another country, that is related to this podcast here: https://realenglishconversations.com/36-english-podcast-moving/

    Transcription:

Curtis:  Yeah. Different types of wildlife, for sure.

Amy:  Out of the trips that we have done, the few trips that we have done around Mexico, what would you say was probably one of the most surprising or spectacular parts for you?

Curtis:  For me, we went to this town called San Sebastián del Oeste. It’s an old mining town and they have this mountain peak that has high elevation as well.

Amy:  Yeah. La Bufa is the name of it.

Curtis:  So what we did was, we rented quads, four-wheel motorcycles, basically, is what they are, and I had never been on one before but you have to take this all the way to the top. And what was really spectacular for me, to answer your question, was the view and you could see the whole bay of Banderas, the bay of flags which we live in from up top. So you could get this bird’s eye view of pretty much the whole bay from up there. So that just blew me away. It was beautiful.

Amy:  Exactly. And they had very big mountains as well. It actually reminded me a lot of British Columbia from up there.

    Curtis:  Yeah.

Amy:  I would say for me probably two of the coolest things and most memorable I experienced back in December last year and it was when we went to Tolantongo, which is an area of Mexico. It was just like as if it was in a completely different world. I couldn’t believe it.

    51. Interview about Snowboarding & Filming | Advanced English Conversations

My interview guest Moreno is back to for part 2 of this interview for an advanced English conversation about snowboarding, hockey, and other Canadian culture. Snowsport enthusiasts will love this discussion!

    Transcription:

Amy: The way that we actually met is through a mutual passion that we have for snowboarding. I remember when I met you, I was absolutely crazy for the sport and I was really, really excited to hang out and have an opportunity to snowboard with you. I know, in my opinion, I think that you are quite an athlete, very talented, and the things that you do are great. And you actually inspired me to become a much better snowboarder. If you remember, you introduced me to snowboarding in trees and much more extreme snowboarding.

Moreno:  I do remember. A lot of fun, a lot of fun.

Amy:  And I was a complete chicken but you helped me to get over that.

Moreno:  Well, that’s what friends are for. You needed a little push, a little guidance, right?

Amy:  That’s right. You know, learning from somebody who is very good at it was a big inspiration. So, how did you get into snowboarding?

Moreno:  Well, I probably started when I was like five years old and I stole my brother’s skateboard, and I didn’t give it back to him.

    Amy:  Okay.

Moreno:  So I kept it from him and started skateboarding just as a regular kid. And I used to ski with my family in the ‘80s at a small ski hill outside of Ottawa.

Amy:  I guess skiing was the thing at that time.

Moreno:  Yeah, it sure was. It still is. Skiing is never going to disappear. Skiing is always going to be popular, but it was mainly just skiing. I guess when I was around 14 when snowboarding slowly became more popular. I guess it was the early ‘90s maybe. Snowboarding was getting more popular but also a little cheaper to buy the gear and things like that. I finally bought a new snowboard. It was the surf style, the skateboarding style. It was the sideways, surf-style that really was familiar with my skateboarding, and I thought it was cool. It was a cool thing. It was, like I said, lay back surf style was what I was looking for and that’s how I started.

Amy: Let’s get started with the interview. How are you doing today, Moreno?

    Moreno: Good. How are you?

Amy: I’m doing great. Thanks. Let’s get started with a little bit of an introduction about you, if you could.

Moreno: Absolutely. So, hi, everyone. My name is Moreno Scatozza. I am a big fan of astronomy. I have a podcast which I speak about the facts of space and planets, stars, anything really to do with astronomy. And I have episodes on this podcast and I’d like to simplify things for the general public, let’s say. Because let’s face it: space, astronomy can be very confusing and also there’s just so much to talk about. So, in my podcast I’d like to kind of simplify things and also put things into category so you could really see things a little more clear.

Amy: Yes. So it’s basically trying to take the scientific version, which is a little bit boring and overwhelming for the typical person and put it into a term that makes it interesting and understandable.

Moreno: That’s what I’m aiming for.

Amy: Nice. That’s cool. Well, I’m sure that some of our listeners that are interested in space exploration and just things that are going on in our universe and planet are going to be interested to check out some of your episodes. How did you get started into this? Where did it come from, this inspiration?

Moreno: Well, I’ve always just loved space since I was a kid. I also wanted to learn more. Once you learned something that you're interested in, you wanted to just keep learning like a snowball effect. You want to progress and want to know why, and after you know why, you want to know why why. And when it comes to space, it’s infinity so there’s always the unknown and it’s always a mystery. So it’s almost like solving things and understanding things. Once you understand things about space, you also understand about things in your normal day-to-day lives, and I find that connection really important and I think a lot of people should know about.

Amy: Okay. Now I want to know exactly what you're referring to. So, how have you found that connection between what you've learned about space to how it relates to your real life?

    48. Spooky Stories: UFO’s & Ghosts | Learn English from Stories

Listen to a natural conversation where we share English stories about spooky experiences we've had related to UFO's, ghosts and haunted houses. You're going to get some great vocabulary and expressions from this English podcast episode!

Spooky Stories: Learn from English Stories

    Transcription:

Yeah, exactly. So, there is one other time that I don’t know what I saw. I don’t know if it was a UFO, I don’t know what it is, but it was super, super weird. There’s one time when we had our delivery business, I was actually doing a delivery in this area called Black Mountain, it’s like a neighborhood. It’s sort of on the side of a hill or in a little valley. So on one side of the valley, there are all these houses and they have a beautiful view, of course, during the day. And on the other side of the valley, there are more houses. But I was on the one side that was – it’s quite steep in that area and you have a pretty good view.

I went up the road and then I did a U-turn and I parked my car in front of the house. This was a regular customer. I remember I looked up after I had parked my car, and there was this super bright light across on the other side of the valley. But I mean, I was born and raised in Kelowna. I know the geography of the city.

    47. Learn Smarter: How to Improve Your English Skills with Effective Activities

In this English podcast, you will learn how to improve your English skills by Identifying the most effective types of activities to rapidly increase your language learning with actionable tips to change your learning strategy. Plus, get some effective activities that will help you learn smarter and faster as an independent language learner!

    ** Transcription Sample: **

So, we’re going to call that kind of level one activity. Level two is just listening to it like we were last night. We weren’t taking notes, we didn’t stop the audio, we were just listening to it. The benefit we’re going to get is very, very little, if any, and I’m not really sure I’d consider it a good use of time and it’s certainly not studying. But level one activity is going to give you some benefit.

Another idea that you could do, if you're somebody who’s driving and maybe you have control on your steering wheel or something, something that isn’t going to distract you, obviously – I’m not promoting distracted driving – but if you have a button on your steering wheel and you can rewind the audio by holding it or pause the audio or something, this is good. What you can do is you can actually pause the audio and try to repeat the last part that the person said as much as you can and then continue playing it. This is going to help you to improve your listening skills and to practice speaking at the same time.
