Fix your audio settings for 5 stars
In school debating speakers are often graded on their “manner, matter and method”
Matter (the raw content, the points made): excellent. Always well informed opinions, clear analysis, genuine expertise, a diversity of views a great listen.
Method (the structure): very good to excellent. Adam usually shepherds the conversation by stringing together a sensible sequence of the crucial questions all done in a logical order with appropriate amount of space given per topic.
Manner (which in school debating refers to how clearly you enunciate, your stage presence and body language, tone of voice, and in a podcast must include microphone technique and sound production): appalling to the point of making it sometimes unlistenable. I have FREQUENTLY stopped an episode because the sound quality just renders it either incomprehensible or unbearable.
Broadcasters sometimes joke about having a “face for radio”. All the panellists here have “voices for print media”. But I can forgive that. You can’t help it if you are a bit adenoidal or a stubborn bit of mucus sits rattling on one of your vocal folds. But you CAN control your microphone settings and post-production. Reiss sometimes sounds like his microphone is in another room while Adam sounds like his mic is inside his mouth. Just as an example listen from the 10 minute mark on the 29 July episode (chosen not because it’s the most egregious example but just the most recent). As Adam finishes his question and hands over to Chris the volume change would blow out many older stereos.
Ideally buy yourselves the same brand microphone, or at least once you’ve finished recording put the file through software like Audacity (it’s free). Apply some effects like “Loudness Normalisation”, “Dynamic Range Compression” and “Noise Reduction”. It will make the world of difference. Please.
(A related but separate complaint is that the ads are SOOO much louder than the other audio. I know it’s standard for them to be a bit louder, but in this it is beyond annoying, it is verging on dangerous).
If it weren’t for that it’d be an easy 5 stars!
